How to Change Domain Ownership
The upgraded Customer Portal allows you to change the owner of your domain name and move it to another HostGator account while still retaining primary user access to manage the domain. Please note that once this process is complete, a 60-day lock will be placed on the domain to prevent unauthorized transfers. This streamlined process makes changing domain ownership within HostGator quick and secure.
To change the owner of a domain:
- Log in to your HostGator Customer Portal.
- Click Domains from the left-hand side menu.
- Locate your domain from the list.
- If you have a single domain in your account, you will be redirected right away to the domain management page.
- If you have multiple domains in your account, you can do the following:
In Advanced view:
- Click the domain or click the domain's vertical ellipsis icon on the far right, under the Actions column.
- Select Manage.
In Summary view:
Locate the domain and click its Settings button.
- If you have a single domain in your account, you will be redirected right away to the domain management page.
- On the domain management page, go to the Transfer or Move Domain section and click the Change Owner button.
- A pop-up will appear, notifying you that this process requires the new owner's contact and billing information. Click on Continue to proceed. As required by ICANN, a 60-day security lock will be placed on the domain.
- Select the account where you want to move the domain.
- If the destination account already exists, select the account and then click Continue.
- If the destination account does not exist yet, please do the following:
- Click the New Account link.
- Enter the new owner's contact information. Please note that you will still be the primary user with access to manage your domain.
- Once done, click Continue.
- Make sure you have a payment method on file. If you don't have one yet, you may be prompted to add a new payment method.
- Once done, click the Save button.
