“Curiouser and curiouser!” Cried Alice. (From Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll)

That's what Alice said during her little stroll in Wonderland. But nope! We're not going down that rabbit hole. We will help you get familiarized with all those technical terms regarding domain names.

The basics

So what is a domain name?

The basic concept is that a domain name is what you type into your browser to access a website. You can think of it this way; if your website is like your home, the domain name is the address for your house or, in this case, your website.

Each computer that is connected to the internet is assigned a unique IP address. An IP address or the "Internet Protocol" address is a series of numbers that identifies your computer or device on the internet (For example, 23.65.75.88). The IP address allows other computers to communicate with one another. However, an IP address can be more challenging to remember, right? So instead of typing a string of numbers in a browser, you just type its "equivalent name." That's your domain name.
