The Basics

So what is a domain name?

The basic concept is that a domain name is what you type into your browser to access a website. You can think of it this way; if your website is like your home, the domain name is the address for your house or, in this case, your website.

Each computer that is connected to the internet is assigned a unique IP address. An IP address or the "Internet Protocol" address is a series of numbers that identifies your computer or device on the internet (For example, 23.65.75.88). The IP address allows other computers to communicate with one another. However, an IP address can be more challenging to remember, right? So instead of typing a string of numbers in a browser, you just type its "equivalent name." That's your domain name.
