Creating Links in Dreamweaver CS5

Create links from text, images, and other elements on a web page by using various techniques in Dreamweaver CS5. Learn how to set the link text, a link title for accessibility, link target, and destination.

Method 1: Using the Insert  Menu

This method allows you the most customization options while implementing a link directly to the page.

  1. Click on the page to mark where the link is to be placed or highlight the text to be used.
  2. Go to the Insert menu
  3. Select Hyperlink.

The Hyperlink dialogue box will then open.

Method 2: Using the Insert Panel

Similar to the method mentioned above, this method allows for links to be added directly to the page.

  1. Click on the page to mark where the link is to be placed or highlight the text to be used.
  2. Go to the Insert Panel.
  3. Select the Common Tab.
  4. Click on the Hyperlink icon (it is the first icon, appearing as a chain).

The Hyperlink dialogue box will then open.

Method 3: Using the Property Manager

This method allows you to implement a hyperlink without disrupting or leaving the workflow environment.

  1. Click on the page to mark where the link is to be placed or highlight the text to be used.
  2. Go to the Property Inspector.
  3. Select the HTML Tag icon.
  4. Move to the Link field.
  5. Select either Point to File or Browse for File.
    • If selecting Point to File, hold the button with your mouse and drag over to the file you wish to link to in the Files Panel. This will open the folder, making all files easily accessible.
    • If selecting Browse for File, the Hyperlink dialogue box will appear.

Hyperlink Dialogue Box

The following options are available in the Hyperlink dialogue box:

  • The Text defines the text to be linked if not already selected.
  • The link can be typed in, or the user can browse for a file link.
  • The Target lets a user decide how the link will frame out, either by framing out into a new window by selecting _blank or other various options.
  • Access Key and Tab Index are both features to be used at the user's discretion and are completely optional, which could assist in the security of specific links.
