Connect a Domain Name via the Hosting Tab
Already have a website or domain name? You can connect your domain through the Hosting tab in your account portal and link it to an existing or newly created website.
Before you begin
- Make sure you have a registered domain name.
- The domain can be registered with HostGator or another registrar.
- If your domain is registered with a third-party provider, you'll need to point its nameservers to HostGator.
Connect a domain to an existing website
If a website already exists in your hosting account:
- Log in to your Customer Portal.
- Click Hosting on the left-hand menu.
- If you have only one hosting plan in your account, you will be automatically redirected to the hosting panel.
- If you have multiple hosting plans, a list will appear. Click Websites under the hosting plan you want to manage.
- Click Manage Site.
- Select Connect Domain.
- Enter the domain name you want to use (for example,
example.com).
- Click Continue.
- Wait while the domain is added to your account.
- If the domain is registered with another provider, update the nameservers to point to HostGator.
- If available, click Finish Setup to view the required DNS or nameserver information.
Connect a domain when no WordPress exists
If you do not have a website set up yet, you must install one before connecting your domain.
You can only add additional websites if your hosting plan has not reached its website limit.
After installing WordPress, connect your domain by following the steps below:
- Log in to your Customer Portal.
- Click Hosting on the left-hand menu.
- If you have only one hosting plan in your account, you will be automatically redirected to the hosting panel.
- If you have multiple hosting plans, a list will appear. Click Websites under the hosting plan you want to manage.
- Click Manage Site.
- Navigate to the Domains tab, then click Add Domain.
- Enter the domain name you want to use (for example,
example.com).
- Click Continue.
- Wait while the domain is added to your account.
- If the domain is registered with another provider, update the nameservers to point to HostGator.
- If available, click Finish Setup to view the required DNS or nameserver information.
