Transferring My Domain Registration Away From GoDaddy

  • Before attempting to transfer a domain away from GoDaddy, you must complete the following steps.
Important
  • After purchasing a domain, you must wait 60 days before transferring it to a new host. This is not a HostGator-specific rule but rather a rule implemented by ICANN, which governs domain registrations. Please review ICANN's Policy on Transfer of Registrations between Registrars for more information.
  • Wait for 24-48 hours after unlocking the domain to ensure it takes effect in WHOIS.
  • While we try to ensure you have the most up-to-date information, GoDaddy is a third party, and Steps 1-4 on this article may change without us knowing.

Step 1: Check the domain's contact information of the domain name

The contact information for your domain needs to be up-to-date so that the EPP code/Authorization Code can be emailed to you. If the contact information of your domain name is up-to-date, please proceed to Step 2.

To update your contact information:

Note: Changing the Organization name for the registrant contact or the First name and Last name for the registrant contact if an organization isn't the legal registrant for the domain name will mean that you cannot transfer the domain for 60 days.
  1. Log in to your GoDaddy Domain Control Center.
  2. Put a checkmark next to the domain(s) you wish to transfer.
  3. Click the Ownership dropdown and then select Update Contacts.
  4. Review and/or update the contact information for accuracy.
    • If the contact details for the different account types are different, uncheck the Use for all contact types, then review the section type for any errors.
  5. Click Save when your changes are complete.

Step 2: Remove privacy protection from the domain

The domain transfer will automatically fail if privacy protection is enabled on the domain name when the transfer request is initiated. All WHOIS information must be publicly visible for the transfer to go through successfully.

To remove your privacy protection:

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy Domain Control Center.
  2. Access the Domain Settings page by choosing your domain.
  3. Select Show personal data on WHOIS next to WHOIS Privacy Settings.
  4. Check how your contact info will display on the public WHOIS directory, then select Continue.
  5. Check the box next to I consent to expose my contact information in the public GoDaddy WHOIS directory., then select Continue.
  6. You'll see a Success confirmation once your settings have been updated.

Step 3: Unlock the domain

If the domain name is locked, the transfer request will automatically fail as the domain must be unlocked before initiating the transfer.

To unlock the domain:

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy Domain Control Center.
  2. Put a checkmark next to the domain(s) you'll be unlocking.
  3. Navigate to Settings, and click on Unlock domain.
  4. Click the checkbox for Yes, I consent to unlock the selected domain, then click Continue.
  5. There will be a confirmation message that your domain has been unlocked.  Note: It usually takes  60-90 minutes for the domain to be unlocked

Step 4: Request EPP Code/Authorization code

Most domain registrars require an EPP code/authorization code to transfer a domain name. This provides an extra layer of security and protects the domain against unauthorized transfers.

To request an EPP code/authorization code:

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy Domain Control Center.
  2. Access the Domain Settings page by choosing your domain.
  3. Scroll down to Additional Settings, and select Transfer domain away from GoDaddy..
  4. Select Continue with transfer after you check the transfer checklist.
  5. Navigate to the bottom, then select Click here to see Authorization Code.
  6. Click Copy to Clipboard to copy your authorization code.
Note: The authorization code will also be sent to the domain's administrator email address on file.

Step 5: Submit domain name transfer request to HostGator

Once all of the above steps have been completed, you should be ready to transfer your domain name to HostGator.

For the instructions in transferring your domain to HostGator, please visit the following article.

Step 6: Approve the transfer of the domain name to HostGator

After a few hours, you should receive an email from GoDaddy confirming that your domain transfer request was received. This is a standard security measure. You will need to approve the transfer in your GoDaddy control panel; otherwise, your transfer may take up to 7 days to complete.

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy Transfers Page.
  2. Under Transfers, select Transfer Out.
  3. Select the checkbox next to your transferred domain.
  4. Click the Approved Transfer button to approve the transfer.
  5. You will see a confirmation that the changes were accepted.

You will receive an email from HostGator once the transfer is complete. If you have not heard from HostGator after seven (7) days, you may contact us via phone or chat to inquire about your transfer status.
