Migration Tickets Getting Started
Please submit the online migration request form to initiate your content migration. If you want extra migrations beyond the free ones, you can ask for those in the online form, and our transfer department will reply with a quote on the price. Telephone and live chat agents cannot quote the price for you, as the migration department will determine when they get your request.
We request that you know that the migration process may take longer than the average support request. This is due to the complexity of this process, the connection speed between your old host and new hosting account, and ensuring that each website is thoroughly reviewed upon completion. The entire process can take 72 hours or longer. Please ensure that your old hosting account remains available until the process can be fully completed. If your old hosting account becomes unavailable during the process, we may be unable to complete the process or correct any errors.
For more information, please visit the HostGator's Website Migration article.
Email accounts usually cannot be transferred. However, if your previous host uses cPanel and your new account with HostGator has cPanel, then we can move your email accounts intact (as well as addon domains, subdomains, and other cPanel configurations).
Content migration merely makes a copy of your website code and databases. The domain name you own will remain under the control of your registrar. If you want to transfer the control of your domain registration to HostGator, please do so by visiting https://www.hostgator.com/domain-transfer.
Hosts we cannot transfer from
- VistaPrint
- SMCinc.com
- Wix
- Intuit
- Website Tonight
- Google Sites
We also cannot transfer from hosts that do not allow access to your website files (typically by FTP) and/or databases and/or the data in those databases. Without access, we cannot copy and migrate your site. Most hosts do give you access, but many don't.
Common problems that delay content migration
Some examples of the common reason for migration delay.
- Incorrect cPanel username and password
We often see customers who provided their online account or incorrect cPanel credentials, but they are not sure if the credentials are correct. Our admins cannot reset and get your cPanel credential with your current host. - Incorrect logins for FTP
We must have FTP access to perform site migration. The migration forms are being submitted without the correct information. We then need to contact you, which delays the migration. - Incorrect hostname/IP address
We often see people putting 1.2.3.4 for the "IP address/Hostname" field because they do not know it. But without the correct IP address or hostname, we cannot migrate your site since we won't know where to find it. - Password was changed while the migration was ongoing
Changing your passwords during the migration process is a detrimental mistake. We all appreciate security, but if you change the passwords, then we cannot access your accounts.
Please remember all the correct information needs to be submitted for the transfer to go smoothly.
