Regenerate Thumbnails or Set New Image Sizes in WordPress

Changing the theme of your WordPress site can sometimes cause your previously uploaded images to look distorted or display improperly while your new images appear fine.

Normally, you can adjust image sizes by going to Settings > Media from the WordPress Dashboard; however, that won't resolve this issue since it only applies to newly uploaded images and not previously existing ones.

In this case, we recommend downloading the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin to generate images in newly defined sizes.

Install Regenerate Thumbnails Plugin

Before adding or activating a new plugin, we recommend making a backup of your WordPress from within the WordPress Dashboard. For instructions on how to backup WordPress, please refer to the following article from WordPress:

You can install the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin via the WordPress admin panel by following the installation steps in the following article:

Plugin Configuration

You will be able to configure the plugin's settings for your own particular needs by doing the following:

  1. From the left hand navigation menu, click Tools > Regen. Thumbnails.
  2. On the next screen, click Regenerate All Thumbnails.

The plugin will then regenerate new image sizes as defined by your theme or on the Settings > Media page.

Note: Some WordPress plugins require further steps for customization. The detailed readme file should contain step-by-step instructions. After installation, this file can be located by going to File Manager in cPanel and opening public_html > wp-content > plugins > regenerate-thumbnails > readme.txt.
