How to Run MTR on Mac

HostGator recommends that you use MTR to run traceroute and ping on a domain with a single tool. The tool is available for Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, and Snow Leopard.

To run a traceroute or ping on a domain using MTR on Mac OS:

  • Go to the URL listed below to download the .pkg file for your version of Mac OS.
  • Double click on the downloaded file to launch the installer. During the installation, you will be asked for your Mac password.
  • Using the Spotlight search or Launcher, locate the Terminal application.
  • Enter the command:
    mtr -rnc 60 example.com

Don't forget to update example.com to the domain you wish to check.

  • The command will take a minute to run through all of the intervals.
