How can I test my connection to HostGator?
Test Connection to HostGator.com
You can test your connection speed to hostgator.com using this test file.
The test file does not contain any useful information, and is just for demonstrating the download speed from hostgator.com. The file is 20 MB in size.
Test Connection to Your HostGator Server
You can run tests to check the connection to your HostGator server. You may use online tools or software on your own machine.
Online Connection Testing Tools
These will test the connection from the online testing site to your HostGator server. This is a quick and useful way to check connectivity to your server, but does not reflect the path from your own machine.
This article shows how to run online tests:
Connection Testing from Your Own Computer
You may use software on your own computer to run a traceroute, which will check your connection to your HostGator server. This will test the actual path your own connection uses.
For Windows users we recommend using WinMTR. Mac users have traceroute functionality already built into OS X.
The articles below will describe how to perform a traceroute:
Testing Download Speed (Root Users Only)
You can create a test file which you may use to test download speeds to your own machine. Run the following command as root on your HostGator package:
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/usr/local/apache/htdocs/20mb.test bs=20971520 count=1
Note: the above command is actually one line, but is word wrapped.
The results should give you useful information as seen in this example:
root@for [~/testdir]# dd if=/dev/urandom of=/usr/local/apache/htdocs/20mb.test bs=20971520 count=1 1+0 records in 1+0 records out 20971520 bytes (21 MB) copied, 1.83125 s, 11.5 MB/s
You can then also test your download speed with other tools by downloading http://ip-address/20mb.test. (Replace ip-address with your server's IP address.)
