HostGator Reseller Account vs. HostGator Affiliate Program

There are two ways you can make money with HostGator. One is to be an affiliate and another is to be a reseller. You can be one or both, and which one you choose depends on a number of factors.  Outlined below are the differences between the two approaches.

Reseller Account

With a reseller account, you can set up your own own web hosting business, with your own branding, support and billing.  HostGator becomes your supplier behind the scenes, and from your customers' perspective, you are their hosting company, not HostGator.

You would want this approach if:

  1. You want to promote your own brand.

  2. You prefer receiving ongoing income from your customers.

  3. You sell other related services, such as web design, and want your customers to come to you for support issues.

  4. You want to bundle hosting with other services you offer.

  5. You want to offer methods of payment that HostGator does not provide.

  6. For international resellers, you want to bill your customers in a currency other than U.S. dollars.

  7. You want to earn money selling domains in addition to web hosting, through a domain registrar such as eNom.

You can promote your web hosting business by:

  • Creating your own website selling web hosting under your own brand and domain.

  • Setting up a billing and support system such as WHMCS (provided free with our reseller and Linux dedicated server accounts).

  • Setting up payment methods, such as PayPal, Google Checkout, a merchant account, and/or others.

Affiliate Program

With our affiliate program, however, you are essentially referring business to HostGator in exchange for a commission.  People sign up for web hosting with HostGator, and they become HostGator customers who in turn utilize HostGator support.

You would want to use this approach if:

  1. You simply want to send us referrals and not have to interact with the customer on an ongoing basis.

  2. You want HostGator to support the customer.

  3. You prefer a one-time lump sum commission rather than smaller ongoing payments from your customers.
