FrontPage No Longer Supported
As of version 11.44, cPanel has deprecated support for FrontPage and will not have the ability to install FrontPage extensions. Previously, Microsoft discontinued support of FrontPage Extensions in 2009. If your server has an older version of cPanel, you may be able to temporarily install the software, however in new version rollouts of cPanel this installation will no longer function.
To provide secure software and continue to provide valuable security updates to our customers, FrontPage Extensions will no longer be compatible with HostGator shared or reseller hosting. It is also strongly recommended to remove this support on VPS and Dedicated Servers in order to continue to receive important cPanel updates.
What Alternatives Do Affected Users Have?
If you use FrontPage Extensions, we strongly suggest exploring other options for creating and maintaining your site. For a review of other options available, see our article:
Are all FrontPage Users Affected?
This change does not affect all FrontPage users. FrontPage Extensions are not required for every website developed with FrontPage. Here is a list of features that will be affected:
- File Upload
- Custom Link Bars
- Shared Border Background Properties
- Usage Analysis Reports
- Top Ten List Web Component
- New Security Features (User Roles)
- Nested Subwebs
- Lightweight Source Control (Document check-in/check-out without Microsoft Visual SourceSafe for Windows)
- Categories Component
- StyleSheet Links to Multiple Files or Active Server Pages (ASP) Files
- Confirmation Field
- Discussion Form Handler
- FrontPage-Created Server-Side Image Maps
- Hit Counter
- Registration Form Handler
- Save Results Form Handler
- Search Form
- Field Set
If your website uses FrontPage Extensions for publishing, or uses any of the components mentioned above, you will be affected by this change. The recommended course of action is to investigate alternative development solutions that function on secure and up to date servers using currently supported software.
What Will Happen to My Site?
Once FrontPage Extensions are no longer available you will no longer be able to publish your site with this feature of FrontPage. The affected FrontPage features will at that time cease to function, and when errors will be generated when attempting to submit a form or load a hit counter.
