Color bars for SSL

The different color bars will appear in the latest versions of Firefox.

The highly desirable green bar will appear in the address bar of Firefox when your SSL certificate is installed successfully, the web page in question is 100% secure content, and the SSL certificate is able to validate whois and company information, among other information.

How can I have this green bar?

You will need an EV SSL Certificate.

My green bar disappears.

  1. Click the icon in the left of the address bar.
  2. The message will tell you if anything is wrong.
  3. A common message is:
Your connection to this site is only partially encrypted, and does not prevent eavesdropping.
  4. This means you have http and https in your HTML coding on your site. Internal file references (such as href and src) must all be https.
  5. Once it is fixed, the blue color should stay, and clicking it will reveal a message like:
    You are connected to
    domain.com
    which is run by
    Company
    Houston
    TX, US

    Verified by: Comodo CA Limited

Your connection to this website is
    encrypted to prevent eavesdropping.

I don't have a color bar with my SSL.

Here is a list of things to check:

  • You must be using Firefox 3.
  • You must use https:// in the address bar.
  • You will get no color bar with a shared or self-signed SSL certificate.
  • If you do not see your website at all, there is a bigger problem. Contact HostGator as we will need to check your SSL installation. Example:
    Secure Connection Failed

If you are sure you have a private SSL, either the $50 or $150 per year certificate, then you may have some coding issues. Contact HostGator for assistance.
