Can I Save Emails on My Old Host and Upload Them to HostGator?

We may or may not be able to copy your emails to your new hosting account, depending on the type of account you had with your old host.

Previous Host: cPanel-based Hosting

If your old hosting plan used cPanel and your HostGator account has cPanel, we can accept a full backup file which contains any emails on the old server.  HostGator can then restore those files onto your HostGator server.

(All Shared, Reseller and Linux Dedicated Servers come with cPanel. VPS plans can choose between cPanel or no control panel; and Windows hosting comes with Plesk.)

Previous Host: Plesk-based Hosting

If your old hosting plan used Plesk and your HostGator account has Plesk, HostGator can accept a full backup file which contains any emails on the old server then attempt to restore those files onto your HostGator server.

Previous Host: Non-cPanel-based Hosting

In instances where the email to be uploaded is from a host that did not use cPanel, HostGator cannot guarantee restoration of the emails through the backup files.

If your previous host was using Maildir, it is best to contact us via phone or chat to determine if moving the emails is possible.

If Emails Cannot Be Restored...

In the event that email cannot be restored, it is recommended that you use a POP3 connection, such as Outlook or Thunderbird, to archive your emails. This way, the emails can be safely stored and referenced on your computer, though you still will not be able to upload the email to the HostGator server.
