Add SSL Certificate in Plesk

Actually, you will be generating an SSL certificate and key pair:

  1. Log in to Plesk.
  2. Select Websites & Domains from the left-hand menu.

  3. Locate and click the SSL/TLS Certificates button in the additional options.

  4. You will see two tools - Add SSL Certificate and View Certificates - in the next section. Choose to add a new certificate.
  5. The next page is an all-in-one form for either creating or uploading a new SSL certificate.

  6. The very first thing you will need to do on this form is fill in the Certificate name box at the top with something unique you can use to identify the certificate later.
  7. If you are only going to upload an SSL certificate, you have already had generated and signed elsewhere, skip down to either the 'Upload certificate files' or 'Upload certificate as text' part of the page as appropriate and skip the next section.
Note: SSL certificate options may not be available within the Plesk Control Panel until the domain has been assigned to a dedicated IP address.

Generating a New SSL Certificate

To generate an SSL certificate, you will need to have set a certificate name in the previous section. Then, in the Settings section, you will need to set the identity parameters for the certificate. This should be the information you provided when you set up the Customer account. Make sure you specify the correct domain name you want to secure (it should be pre-filled) and a valid email address.

You will have a choice of three buttons to choose from when you are done filling in the required information. The first button, labeled Request, will create the key and certificate along with a signing request in the system, then redirect you back to the Secure Your Sites page where your new certificate will be listed at the bottom. Next, you can order an SSL certificate from your preferred SSL vendor. When you are asked, you will only need to click on the name of the SSL certificate you created and then copy and paste the CSR from the page.

If you choose the Buy SSL Certificate button, a pop-up window will appear where you can buy the SSL certificate without needing to search for a provider. The original window will redirect back to the Secure Your Sites page, where your new SSL certificate is listed at the bottom. Once you are done filling out the form in the pop-up window to purchase your new signed certificate, click on the name of the certificate you just created in the original window and copy the CSR into the form on the order page.

The Self-Signed button allows you to create a self-signed certificate for the site using the information you provided. Because the server will have already signed the certificate, you will not be able to generate a CSR later even though the button to generate a request will appear on the properties page for the certificate. You should only generate a self-signed certificate if you are sure you won't need to secure financial transactions later on; if you do need to secure transactions, you will need to generate a new certificate for the site.

In this instance, as we are only interested in securing logins for WordPress, you may click the Self-Signed button, but be sure to evaluate your needs before making your selection.

For SSL certificates from a trusted certificate authority, it will be necessary to apply the certificate to the domain(s) within the Hosting Settings of Plesk once the SSL certificate has been added to Plesk.
