First, the author pictures next to the results conspicuously disappeared. Then, videos started to vanish for most results (except those of YouTube and other sources where video is a primary source of content). Now, author names have disappeared. According to John Mueller from Google&#8217;s Webmaster Analytics team, Authorship has indeed been removed from your search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Google-Authorship-Dead-300x249.png\" alt=\"Is Google Authorship Dead\" class=\"wp-image-8659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Google-Authorship-Dead-300x249.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Google-Authorship-Dead.png 668w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A few months ago, the same search would have displayed the associated Google+ profile picture and related information, as shown in the image below from <a title=\"our prior blog post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/25\/are-you-using-google-authorship-correctly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our prior Authorship blog post<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"546\" height=\"106\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/google_authorship.jpg\" alt=\"What Authorship Looked Like\" class=\"wp-image-5789\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/google_authorship.jpg 546w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/google_authorship-300x58.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now the posts are stripped down to provide you the content that you&#8217;re looking for without the fluff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Was Authorship Removed?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you ever set up authorship, then you know it was not the easiest process to start with. There were several steps involved, including an update your site&#8217;s code to add the markup. If you were using a CMS like WordPress, the markup wasn&#8217;t too hard, but HTML sites were a little harder to modify. Since the entire ordeal wasn&#8217;t an easy 1-2 step process, it had a low adoption rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As stated in Mueller&#8217;s post, and speculated by many, Authorship simply did not have any direct impact to an increase in clicks or rankings. A direct quote from the post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;If you\u2019re curious &#8212; in our tests, removing authorship generally does not seem to reduce traffic to sites. Nor does it increase clicks on ads. We make these kinds of changes to improve our users\u2019 experience.&#8221;<\/em><br>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Authorship Completely Dead?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From search results, it appears to be mostly (though not entirely) gone. As explained by Mueller, search queries will still show relevant posts from your Google+ connections with their information. So if you were connected with an author and searched for information pertaining to them, then you may see something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"522\" height=\"132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2014-09-15-at-11.47.58-AM.png\" alt=\"The Google Authorship Update\" class=\"wp-image-8660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2014-09-15-at-11.47.58-AM.png 522w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2014-09-15-at-11.47.58-AM-300x75.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 522px) 100vw, 522px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind, the <b><em>rel=author<\/em><\/b> markup didn&#8217;t just affect search; social media displays this information as well. With Pinterest, you can <a title=\"Stand Out On Pinterest With Rich Pins\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/04\/stand-pinterest-rich-pins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stand out with rich pins<\/a>. You don&#8217;t necessarily need to go through the process adding the authorship through Google+ to include the <b><em>rel=author<\/em><\/b> tag, but who wouldn&#8217;t want a good branded back link on a Google product?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you think?
