That generated some backlash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image-6-1024x514.png\" alt=\"tweets talking about how companies sent out coronavirus emails\" class=\"wp-image-28109\" width=\"512\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image-6-1024x514.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image-6-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image-6-768x385.png 768w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image-6.png 1180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A good guideline: <strong>If a crisis directly affects the way you do business with your customers, it\u2019s time to speak up.<\/strong> So, if a flood means you can\u2019t deliver takeout, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/quick-ways-contact-customers\/\">let customers know right away<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if a broader crisis like COVID is looming, leave your customers\u2019 bandwidth clear for messages from the media and the authorities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-will-speak-for-your-company\">Who will speak for your company?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t have a PR person? Whoever\u2019s calmest in a mess is your go-to person. Pick a backup speaker, too, in case your chosen crisis communicator isn\u2019t available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-will-you-need-to-speak-to\">Who will you need to speak to?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Customers, definitely. Depending on the crisis, you may also need to contact the media, the police, banks, your supply chain, and neighboring businesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/edwardsegal\/2021\/05\/08\/colonial-pipeline-cyber-attack-is-providing-crisis-management-lessons-in-real-time\/?sh=7c16c3603d82\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when the Colonial Pipeline shut down<\/a> to deal with a ransomware attack, their PR team communicated with the press and posted a statement on their website. The company also got in touch with law enforcement. Behind the scenes, they were almost certainly communicating with their wholesale customers and suppliers to keep them up to date, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-will-you-say-in-a-crisis-statement\">What will you say in a crisis statement?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep it simple. Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>what\u2019s happening (or what happened)<\/li><li>how it affects your customers<\/li><li>what you\u2019re doing about it<\/li><li>when your customers can expect another update.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t blame, speculate or try to lighten the mood. That brings us to'\u00a6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-will-you-say-it\">How will you say it?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With empathy, please. If a wildfire damages your store and community, your store-closed announcement should acknowledge that your customers are going through a crisis, too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who endured days of freezing cold without power in February\u2019s Texas ice storm saw how a lack of empathy can sting. Here\u2019s one small but important way you can help.'\u009d<\/em> Speaking of help'\u00a6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-find-out-how-your-business-can-help-and-let-people-know-what-you-re-doing\">Find out how your business can help and let people know what you\u2019re doing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Houstonians basically all know 'Mattress Mack,'\u009d thanks to his decades of wild TV commercials involving lots of arm waving, mattress costumes and even a Ferrari with a mattress strapped to the roof.
