Late last year, we debuted our first real foray into videos about a product other than our own.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/VJ_pqm3LSYHiK9KANMJFgvr1HaQAhoWdj8I3OFhpdgfaHD8BFRxeH3wpcXvFoh-CfrwlsAg1VHNviYKE5dtQaFQm9CByvhLZpdlnIsqNVAOoEHn3Gtux2YJLIGsiAQ\" alt=\"workin with wordpress youtube series\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLl8gcdjf_J_naqGVKRP1Q6zP0InKyGrRU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Workin\u2019 with WordPress<\/a> is designed to help our customers build and maintain their WordPress sites so they can stick with it and grow their blog or business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We decide what to cover in each episode based on what our audience tells us they need, whether that\u2019s through their comments or through their search and viewing habits, so they get content that answers their questions and helps them get comfortable using WordPress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway:<\/strong> You can use social media to help your customers work with products related to yours-and you can use feedback and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/youtube-analytics-guide\/\">analytics<\/a> to decide which topics to tackle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-we-did-more-with-instagram-stories\">2. We did more with Instagram Stories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/facebook-instagram-stories-business\/\">embraced Stories on Instagram<\/a> in 2020 for many reasons, including visibility, deeper engagement with our audience and higher click-through rates as people swipe up to learn more about the Stories we share.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/SWeqhP_N1AWUAOZVs9C8Jlx0gJm14nk0ktaOoko5SGqKv6Vj_zbgp2_aQtIwga2x9UjrdPoHU8OrG1j571DCNrM70S7HIYeEVg4u21zoGascpJL9FvSDR01sE_Y4Jg\" alt=\"hostgator instagram stories\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve been testing as we go to see what works, sharing cool posts and doing some work with influencers, too. We\u2019ve also kept an eye out for other user generated content, or UGC, that can be turned into an awesome story.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway:<\/strong> Explore Stories as a way to build stronger connections with your audience and bring them to your blog or website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-we-found-our-audience-focus-on-twitter\">3. We found our audience focus on Twitter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, we did a lot of testing with Twitter and we found that we have a more techie audience on Twitter than we do on Facebook. So, on Twitter we like to share coding tips and other content that caters to people who are building and managing websites. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HostGator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Follow us here!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/XGzApKO5AQ5oFaZVLtKtN9cjZkBHF0EraTq1L2sc5DAuvl6B9Q-lwS7TaewniOeBey-pGVtrRW8oSrGdSo9d6Wgfweuh85kqOq5nfuSYFIRCPfYCJUE4ESFov1ozP0yPCuulTas\" alt=\"hostgator tweet\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway:<\/strong> Understand what your audience wants on each platform so you can deliver it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-we-started-a-facebook-group-community\">4. We started a Facebook Group community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On Facebook, meanwhile, our audience is more interested in small business, ecommerce and introductory web development content. It\u2019s also a good audience for discussion and support groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/SYmaWG4zSMC4lx8Bvpf7Jb6VYVQJVRmLLUea0DKCPEX30Ve8GMjgb3ZPaRH6kclwKx9dGuG6h-Z0XIFOfXPDj0genUOuojvT4oZkw1ODPeGvdiIHG8CGHlqPfY8lPAB5FIreLu4\" alt=\"hostgator facebook group\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of our Facebook audience\u2019s interests and the pressure the pandemic put on small businesses, in early 2020 we started the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/235295287866454\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Website Owners Helping Website Owners group<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We set it up as a place where website owners and web pros could swap tips, get help and share resources at a time when shutdowns made it hard for many of us to get   or give   help through regular channels. Now, the group has 3,600 members and lots of active, practical discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway: <\/strong>Use social groups to fill a need and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/create-successful-online-community-facebook\/\">build community around your brand<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-we-tapped-into-trending-hashtags-when-it-made-sense\">5. We tapped into trending hashtags-when it made sense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hashtags are great for helping people find stuff they\u2019re interested in, which means they can help you connect new people to your brand. However, using the wrong hashtags or too many can undermine your outreach efforts, and the right approach to hashtags varies by social platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/business.twitter.com\/en\/blog\/the-dos-and-donts-of-hashtags.html#:~:text=One%20to%20two%20relevant%20hashtags%20per%20Tweet%20is%20the%20sweet%20spot.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter recommends limiting hashtags to one or two<\/a> per tweet, so that\u2019s what we do. Every now and then we\u2019ll use three or four but only if there\u2019s a really good reason.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/j2GpciQ5zTFqDXrB3_rpafX1T5AUEkp5jtpAoTuEmWM4-dvGwSC6Vwf4hJyoX7unyKkI-G8aNEQQYQVTZ3W557ELkNDFgHrOhCnZhxZKxfRwRy6mhTwqYqSANIUXBDlI8b51IHE\" alt=\"hostgator hashtags\"\/><figcaption><em>Sometimes one hashtag is all you need.&nbsp;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Instagram, you can add up to 10 hashtags per Story and 30 per post. We try to keep it around seven, based on studies we\u2019ve looked at. Again, that\u2019s our guideline, not a hard rule.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting in on trends when they\u2019re relevant is useful, but not every hashtag needs to drive traffic to be effective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/3FutZNlzjG8sRek8xeJIN70q5IvXfcm6t-6qOR5gql35jyWm1ugYM9KNDk4ala3rLj8O0MzCi4PsT7uiJnyFrwzsZkvwVL_qPGxNILG603TwvQ8AjMAQqDoNHWjq--DP5siBpIM\" alt=\"using funny hashtags to connect with audience\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, adding a funny hashtag like #itsprobablydns shows your audience that you understand the kind of stuff they deal with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway: <\/strong>Use hashtags to connect, and don\u2019t overdo them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-we-encouraged-our-audience-to-talk-about-themselves\">6. We encouraged our audience to talk about themselves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media users usually like having their moment in the spotlight, and we try to offer that. Asking open-ended questions gives your audience a chance to look good by sharing useful or clever answers. Here\u2019s an example from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/HostGator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/4-wxyxWWwCuFQ1DAzLrE7vIuR0Lm6X1MYhrwLndAh3m-Y0mJABUCawVKY82lfFvBLeE05XXyPl_Z7wewOHIWakr-Fa8U04sLoDj9wwHgWMiFVr2ejTqUPs_uulWCVS6yPrYfXGk\" alt=\"hostgator instagram community\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also a good way to find out more about what your audience knows, wants and likes-and you may be able to get new ideas for content from their comments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway:<\/strong> Give your audience a chance to share what they know, to build engagement and learn about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-we-celebrated-hostgator-s-18th-birthday-by-giving-back\">7. We celebrated HostGator\u2019s 18<sup>th<\/sup> birthday by giving back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Snappy turned 18 in 2020, and we celebrated with gifts to the community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/donate-2-celebrate-2020\/\">ran a hosting-plan promotion<\/a> and a social campaign to raise funds and awareness for Code2College, a nonprofit that supports diversity in STEM by helping students of color, girls and students from low-income households get the experience and connections they need to launch coding careers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/pqHvyLFVdr4FrbNj21uEvwUFdfCrkefN9b7Zc6m-3_G3HA9DdvGUpvI_l0WQsu6PMwgYelJ5aFEovQYlRs1e3ANXWM3rApBeMHn_I7nazwzi2vrwrnA7BKvirGo2gnmk6VjQFug\" alt=\"fundraising campaign on twitter\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway:<\/strong> Celebrate your milestones by helping your community - and invite your audience to join in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-we-strategically-updated-our-old-youtube-tutorials\">8. We strategically updated our old YouTube tutorials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We produce a lot of how-to videos for our YouTube audience, and sometimes the tutorials get out of date. But if those videos are getting traffic for keywords we want to rank in, taking it down could leave a gap for weeks or months until the new video starts ranking well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid losing the SEO juice from popular videos when they need updating, we create a new video with new info, and then add a card to the old video that directs people to the new one. Over time, the new video replaces the old one in search results and we don\u2019t have a coverage gap on that topic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/optimize-youtube-channel\/\">Optimize your YouTube content<\/a> without losing SEO presence by referring viewers of out-of-date videos to new ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-we-embraced-nostalgia\">9. We embraced nostalgia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past year, a lot of people felt wistful for times that felt simpler, more fun, less pandemic-y. Especially for the millennials, the appeal of late 90s and early 2000s references like Tamagotchis, JNCO Jeans and Pogs is really strong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/4x6xR4g4CawulylfEr25ZJ9YwZmsKSSo51xwvBFaskcQtbFrIQu8NyrrdvbpmdeGDHSobAXOzycZYW1TblXjBrut8gSMexwyRv4kedCkeY-gp7GeOW7OueCqgT1RK25TnVfkSyc\" alt=\"use memes on instagram\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We love nostalgia, too. For example, we really like Harry Potter, and we love a Harry Potter-themed web development reference. The trick is to make nostalgic themes relevant to our audience by tying it into what we do and what our audience is there for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway:<\/strong> Find out what your audience is nostalgic for and serve it up-as long you can connect it to what you do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-we-gave-away-more-swag\">10. We gave away more swag<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you thank a follower who gives you a shoutout on social media or perk up someone who could use a boost?
