HostGator Web Pro Alexis Krasinski describes Core Web Vitals (CWV) as 'page speed metrics designed to help site owners understand how well their site is performing.'\u009d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/XHoTXJ2TMkzkr2PSO_E7iErp-JXJHkX18-H97dV6yar7yJHUEN-oTlTDJdFlXX0NI27uXCCW_xaj_zqeUPk_3TbnbII6wj2CxD_hUaeTfGhxAAJmM-e9L6TUgrUeMnTrgXoJ3No\" alt=\"Diagram of Google page experience signals, which include Core Web Vitals, Mobile Friendly, Safe Browsing, HTTPS, and No Intrusive Interstitials.\"\/><figcaption><em>Image: Google Search Central<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The other four elements that will factor into page experience are the mobile friendliness of the site, the absence of harmful content like malware and phishing pages, the presence of HTTPS to encrypt data that visitors enter on the site, and a lack of intrusive pop-ups that block visitors\u2019 view of content on the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-the-page-ranking-signal-rollout-mean-for-website-owners\">What does the page ranking signal rollout mean for website owners?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three key things to know about the changes coming in May.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Search rankings may change for a lot of websites.<\/strong> For sites that are doing OK in results but offer a great page experience, this may be an opportunity to rank higher. On the other hand, sites that need to improve their page experience may see a drop in rank until they fix their issues.<\/li><li><strong>Google might add labels in search results for pages that meet all of its page experience expectations<\/strong>, according to Search Engine Journal. If that happens, users will probably visit labeled pages more often - why wouldn\u2019t you want a better experience - and unlabeled pages may see less search traffic.<\/li><li><strong>Now is the time to check your site\u2019s page experience performance<\/strong> and start making improvements if you need to.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you get your site ready for the page experience signal update? There are five steps to take now to see how well your site does on page experience. Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-measure-your-site-s-core-web-vitals\">1. Measure your site\u2019s Core Web Vitals&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our post on understanding your site\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/core-web-vitals-update\/\">Core Web Vitals<\/a> will walk you through the steps and tools you need to see how fast your site loads now and get suggestions for speeding it up - whether you\u2019re a novice site owner or an experienced developer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-take-a-fresh-look-at-your-site-s-mobile-friendliness\">2. Take a fresh look at your site\u2019s mobile friendliness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>HostGator\u2019s been turning out blog posts on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/how-make-website-mobile-friendly\/\">making your site mobile-friendly<\/a> for years now. That\u2019s because having a mobile friendly site is super important - and because expectations for mobile friendliness are always improving.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s been a couple of years since you checked your site\u2019s mobile-friendly score, or if you haven\u2019t ever done that, it\u2019s time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Head on over to <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/test\/mobile-friendly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google\u2019s Mobile-Friendly Test<\/a> page and enter the URL of the page you want to test.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/wKbp0sw2h1PCphmzeS-NgiJXb3raqO0uDesViIYj_Cv3SGf1FLHjJFvQk1E_nuNCiEQrWjSlnTjiQPNYHHx2dk8Q3-8OaYo5rmsG10b8NJva_SEb9vOCuR8MFxcw8KI41su4q0c\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>Just sayin.\u2019<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes just a minute or so for Google to test your page and render its verdict. If you have a small website, it won\u2019t take long to test every page. If your site is larger, you might want to focus on the pages that matter most for your SEO efforts, or those that aren\u2019t ranking as well as you want them to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Google says your pages aren\u2019t mobile friendly, or if it mentions loading issues at the top of your result, you can view details at the top and then scroll down for your sitewide mobile usability report. It will show you which pages couldn\u2019t be loaded, JavaScript errors and other issues, so you can work on fixing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ace the mobile friendly test? Great! Time to move on to safe browsing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-see-if-your-site-meets-safe-browsing-standards\">3. See if your site meets safe browsing standards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/malware-explained-among-us\/\">Malware is a constant threat<\/a> to site owners and visitors, and Google wants to make sure site owners are taking the right steps to prevent it, along with deceptive pages (aka phishing pages) and harmful downloads than can wreak havoc on visitors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check to see that you\u2019ve taken these steps, and if not, take them now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Register your site in Google Search Console so you can get alerts if Google finds a security issue on your site.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Sign up for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/sitelock\">reputable website security scanning service<\/a>, like HostGator partner SiteLock.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Follow these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/secure-wordpress-site-from-hackers\/\">seven best practices for keeping your WordPress site secure<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-switch-to-https-already-the-s-stands-for-secure\">4. Switch to HTTPS already - the S stands for secure!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been a few years since Google added HTTPS as an element in search ranking, but there are still sites out there using old-school, unprotected HTTP. That\u2019s not good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the difference? Unlike HTTP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/what-is-a-ssl-certificate\/\">HTTPS<\/a> encrypts communication between the site and its visitors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That can keep cybercriminals from, say, seeing your payment card information when you enter it on an ecommerce site, or stealing your login credentials. It can also keep visitors from bailing because they get a security warning when they land on your site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you know if your site uses HTTPS? Enter your URL in a browser bar and see what icon comes up to the left of it when your site loads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it a padlock? <strong>You\u2019re good!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it a triangle with an exclamation point? <strong>You need to add an SSL certificate. <\/strong>Follow our support steps to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/help\/article\/hostgator-free-ssl\">get and enable a free SSL from HostGator<\/a> or upgrade to a premium SSL.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-investigate-your-interstitials\">5. Investigate your interstitials<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/website-pop-ups-best-practices\/\">Pop-ups on your website<\/a> can help people find coupon codes, sign up for deals, and see your cookies policy easily.
