Here is a picture of what the Gutenberg editor looks like in the fullscreen mode in WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/tQzQOu39FEtf0q_W_9wQ4IPm7lMo959YhLr0RMGH7xbvPZyblKmul1OwiONM4GG4LlzIaA-ZTr-_jPc_cs2OKzNQ_kF6NdX2YCyoegQj68yLcVjnkKRWymZoqmf29hugzoe6nu8q\" alt=\"gutenberg full screen mode\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The top left side of the screen has clickable shortcuts for the most basic functions you are likely to complete on a new page or post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll see a plus button (+) which allows you to add a new content block, a pen that allows you to edit, two arrows that act as undo and redo buttons, an information button that tells you basics about word count, block count, character count, etc., and three lines that, when clicked, show you a list view of your content blocks for easy navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the main section of the page, you\u2019ll see 'Add title'\u009d and the same plus sign off the right that is on the top left navigation bar.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 'Add title'\u009d is where you enter the title of your page and it is pre-programmed to act as your H1 tag for SEO purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you click on the '+'\u009d button, you can add a new content block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/ZP2A2yZv0SwvdeJGRo_1RlwMBeDdLG7jQQkMe-tNCUAvRwDNvyWZb4MFrplnJZjkrZiF6xDpXw7ggr9FqcFQvO5ShQgRYgzGBsgn0fu5F7ZtBFYQpMkhiB_7dKQFC2HsvXL4c2g8\" alt=\"add a new content block in gutenberg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the right side of the screen, you\u2019ll see two tabs, 'post'\u009d and 'block.'\u009d If you click on either of the respective tabs, you\u2019ll be able to edit and add various features to your post or to a content block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, on the top right side of the page is where you will find the 'Preview,'\u009d 'Publish,'\u009d and settings icons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, that\u2019s the gist of it! Now, let\u2019s talk about fun things you can do with Gutenberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-add-your-first-bit-of-content-by-clicking-the-sign\">1. Add your first bit of content by clicking the '+'\u009d sign<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguably, the coolest feature of Gutenberg is how it builds pages and posts with simple content blocks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the olden days of WordPress, website owners had to use various plugins and\/or code to accomplish what you can now accomplish by simply clicking the plus sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you click the plus sign, you\u2019ll notice a few different options.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/ikf09xKtayHLkLA3JtFYrbg3QcYQrTXuOcbW4mZSWHo9LfbshF0ncr28Gi3Tt-EFAcAbxln2PS5VCGWqX2tqnYjGo84UuKaA-PW-lfwuWdl2h1dd5I03j0ZxeuZjT-xBcpu1DQXQ\" alt=\"click plus sign to add new content block in gutenberg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Search for a content block<\/li><li>Pick one of the most popular content blocks<\/li><li>Browse the various content block options<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I personally like the search feature best. By entering a simple keyword, Gutenberg will serve up content block options that match my keyword.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if I want to embed a video, I can search 'video,'\u009d and Gutenberg offers various options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/qbu-2aJ4vt70tp2vIwn5N3kK0Wnc7JtVjmmXTO7fRV-4jjt6fiOT59zCYuxoJ7M-SYSeVgAK5vaiN1ACpQ7NZk5HPzwNZiAAeMtYZfgrBSpcrHl5pP4MGrzLMnu2TkCUfdBCPLA_\" alt=\"search for content block in gutenberg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I create all my videos with YouTube, I select 'YouTube'\u009d from the dropdown list and enter my embed code.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Give yourself some time to explore the various content block options. If you can dream it in WordPress, you can probably do it with a content block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-drag-images-directly-from-your-desktop-and-drop-them-into-wordpress\">2. Drag images directly from your desktop and drop them into WordPress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever been using a certain content platform and wanted to add a picture? Then, when you went to drag and drop your picture from your desktop directly into the content, the picture reloaded in another random page, and the page you were using disappeared?<br><br>With all the advances in technology in the 21st century, this scenario should never happen. And, it never does when you\u2019re using Gutenberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To add a picture to your blog post or page, all you have to do is drag it from your desktop and drop it into the content. No questions asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-copy-and-paste-from-anywhere-into-wordpress\">3. Copy and paste from anywhere into WordPress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another similar frustration for bloggers is when you write something in Google Docs or Microsoft Word and then, for whatever reason, can\u2019t copy and paste it into your content management system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gutenberg is up with the times as it allows you to copy information from any other platform and paste it directly into WordPress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This feature applies to text and images alike. This means you don\u2019t have to spend extra time by saving images and text to your desktop and uploading them into WordPress. Copying from one platform to another will do the trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-use-slash-to-quickly-insert-content-blocks\">4. Use slash '\/'\u009d to quickly insert content blocks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s not difficult to click on the '+'\u009d button to add a content block to your page or post, it\u2019s nice to know you have options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to quickly insert a common content block into your page, all you have to do is press the slash button, and Gutenberg will serve up a quick menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/JLmoZ7kJQG3E8Cr-AQHuauu-9IQgdxJH_WK8pWpAgr7HgpEXRP5YXyMBCrlI9_yTZTn_YCmzF0u1nhtCAiLHcl_ZSBv-dHplYCukZP9H9N5i5DsRkFx-rwWgTIABSNJf7_u2HZP1\" alt=\"press slash to add new gutenberg block\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a specific content block in mind, you can press the slash button and start typing the name of the content block.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you wanted to add a YouTube video, you could simply press 'slash'\u009d and then type 'YouTube'\u009d and Gutenberg will present the YouTube content block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/c7rLhwEkCmoi0s-hPSubtbB-avX0i1qGVQV13siP0jfbA6i0AKn5WSzqXpyxgyL8gqaa-oy8fsO5O9Ft8Po4etfkR8NSRJcAzrkPbrLeqYD3yWf1pjrXc7nCL6H-3jL_oPY3LjcC\" alt=\"type slash and name of content block to quickly add it in gutenberg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Awesome, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-save-time-with-gutenberg-keyboard-shortcuts\">5. Save time with Gutenberg keyboard shortcuts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we\u2019re already on the topic of shortcuts, let\u2019s talk about the Gutenberg keyboard shortcuts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you can use all of the typical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wordpress-keyboard-shortcuts\/\">keyboard shortcuts<\/a> for copy, paste, italics, bold, and underline. Rearrange blocks with drag and drop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to rearrange blocks in Gutenberg may be my favorite feature. Before cool editor updates like Gutenberg, you had to do a lot of copying and pasting and moving of code or plugin info to rearrange your content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Gutenberg, all you have to do is select the block you want to move, and then drag it to where you want it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-switch-up-your-toolbar\">7. Switch up your toolbar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to how you view your tools, Gutenberg gives you options. The default top toolbar includes the basic functions mentioned at the beginning of this article and looks like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/cL_6ojCG-11AWLylmdR4QGKGyj6soSrdrjxWHhumb4V4eMdQi7N-fUKGL45PypYr113wcFFG6nuuMIU2i-QGSXuWQ5RcVJ3uIvuMOiRtBnt3sNtxmFMm91XyvDHsGrH0_9jIm-UM\" alt=\"edit gutenberg toolbar\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you like to have more formatting options visible on your toolbar, then clock on the three vertical dots on the far right and top side of your screen. Then, select 'Top toolbar.'\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/aW2HmpcgPB8NjQvjGEWqY2OdC0LGEfBL23wo9sYijbY8CCpiWnPBKdUyoIqBTQ8Uh2jZ-cxpcjJc6lQsjsyBaw7NNW0zTq9xiGlhMjoaudzxFelor56FGvC21OGnBEeX5TAPQFcp\" alt=\"add top toolbar for more editing functions in gutenberg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you see a checkmark appear on the right side of this option, you\u2019ll have more top toolbar options. Your toolbar will look like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/cB9qc3F9SeJTJptAB2pBNa4kJjpKM4VdvqIJ3QMu-jjaSA9OxR861b9pWjhpUdVQuCgdmceIk8Rj8wHainwJX3cy5BqhERVtXPVtPaH8Wy0RX3CEb5XUBnChH3yYJ7r_1-SGDoDy\" alt=\"complete gutenberg toolbar\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-add-a-content-block-between-two-content-blocks\">8. Add a content block between two content blocks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say you are writing a long blog post and plan to add a YouTube video and some images later, but don\u2019t have the video or images ready yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can write out all of your content in various content blocks and add the video and image content blocks later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All you have to do is hover your cursor between the two content blocks, click on the '+'\u009d button, and then search for the respective video or image content block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes it possible to easily create your posts and pages in steps, even if you don\u2019t have everything ready all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-enjoy-different-writing-screen-modes\">9. Enjoy different writing screen modes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only does Gutenberg allow you to switch up your toolbar, but you can also select different writing modes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you click on the same three vertical buttons on the top right side of your WordPress screen, you\u2019ll also see 'Spotlight mode'\u009d and 'Fullscreen mode.'\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-1g08SycZDL4poLs03xhf1EA4BeEeewdJZpCDs2zuwOSTTgFI0fUEn__RzV2Brp7NPUFOKjiItLjQVVwLVqJ_sjSUtddVcDi_vv4SytU6lckmHL8qJ0-0h3PBTm6jSvw5aMV5x9q\" alt=\"toggle between spotlight or fullscreen mode in gutenberg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to focus on one block at a time, select 'Spotlight mode.'\u009d If you want to block out your WordPress dashboard and only see your post or page, select 'Fullscreen mode.'\u009d You can use various combinations of these options as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also notice that 'Fullscreen mode'\u009d has a keyboard shortcut next to it, making it possible to switch to this writing mode with a keyboard shortcut as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-enter-line-breaks-within-a-content-block\">10. Enter line breaks within a content block<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be overkill to enter a new content block every time you need a new paragraph break. Really, you only need a new content block if you\u2019re changing the type of content you\u2019re adding to a page.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what\u2019s the workaround?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to continue writing text in one block, don\u2019t want to create a new content block, and only want to add a new paragraph, click 'shift enter.'\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-copy-and-paste-links-directly-into-wordpress\">11. Copy and paste links directly into WordPress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We talked about how you can copy and paste images and content into Gutenberg directly, but that\u2019s not all. Gutenberg also makes it possible to copy and paste links directly into WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best part is if you copy a link directly into Gutenberg, the editor will recognize, convert, and allow you to embed that link as a visual. You can also opt to add the link as a link, instead of as a visual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-12-add-jump-links-with-the-html-anchor-feature\">12. Add jump links with the HTML Anchor feature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jump links, or anchor links, are an excellent way to organize long content and are often beneficial to SEO. In short, an anchor link allows you to create a link that, when clicked, will jump the page to the part of the content where the content creator placed the link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best example of this is a clickable table of contents. Any time you click on a specific link in a table of contents and the content moves you to that section of the document, the author used an anchor link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of adding an anchor link used to be somewhat involved. Gutenberg makes it easy. To create an anchor link, click on the header block where you want the link, then click on the 'Block'\u009d tab on the right side of your screen. Click on 'Advanced.'\u009d From here, you\u2019ll see an 'HTML anchor'\u009d field. Give a name to your anchor field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/PENhZc_XQVgxwD5ddP09locSy6EF4PQPeOvyG70WVutASR75neJYUHX4AmxFTJkmCvquq_dO5srcqpDX04s1BxeSYSSIV0YrLZXxjhoj7U7U_LiYDRv9R4k8syPsD-xIQ3EgoWO-\" alt=\"add anchor link in wordpress gutenberg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve named your tag, select the text where you want to link the anchor. Insert the anchor name you gave to your section, and add a '#'\u009d before the link text.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-13-create-reusable-blocks\">13. Create reusable blocks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say you have a block of content you want to use on several different pages. Maybe it\u2019s a call to action? Perhaps it\u2019s your content information. Maybe it\u2019s a 'purchase now'\u009d button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably don\u2019t want to recreate that content block on every page, especially if you operate a large website with loads of pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The time-saving alternative is to create reusable blocks. A reusable block is what it sounds like. It\u2019s a custom block that you can reuse over and over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve created a block, you can make it reusable by saving it as a template. Simply click on the three dots on the block and select 'Add to Reusable Blocks.'\u009d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gutenberg will save your block and you can use it again on any other page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-14-create-columns\">14.
