Her stylist, Cinna, knows that the way to get sponsors is to give the audience what they want-spectacle. So, Cinna lights up Katniss\u2019 wardrobe. And you don\u2019t need to fight your competitors for access to these SEO 'supplies'\u009d the way Katniss had to fight other tributes for access to food, tools and tents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three we recommend:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Google Keyword Planner. This is the place to start because it\u2019s powerful and it\u2019s free. And that provides search volume. If you have your Google Search Console account set up, that&#8217;s an easy way to see what keywords are sending traffic to your site.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/uwq8dn-Tr_yq3FQcV8NSgj7Bmg9_v6EeyyfjvcpbnnWTaEkqITDVS3SpIOAWiplrJIG0T4PtFqqyoMMfhIYIJBsebY9_kWQmVN9SjyqerDgnimhoTilN7j7JZvV_7w6tAY-iaccq6ppobD1YkA\" alt=\"google keyword planner\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li>Ahrefs also has a suite of SEO tools, including Keywords Explorer, which identifies keyword ideas, gives you a sense of how competitive those keywords are, and projects search traffic based on them. Monthly plans start at $99\/month after a $7, seven-day trial.<\/li><li>Semrush offers a huge suite of search engine marketing tools including 6 keyword research tools to identify, analyze and compare keywords. Monthly subscriptions start at $120\/month after a seven-day free trial.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What about just using Google autocomplete?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/OfQehbnaoIPJokFyLwUaerZzJzRcNpw1NSmFC2mHrZGNjQvk56EubcslAS6KFutNHOVfibGPq4ic7ZL4UCDYooutgHDl0pfv3rGpG40kaw_lXbiZ9fyarhLSgP8r6dqzT64spdnqgeLJ94oQNg\" alt=\"google autocomplete keyword suggestions\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Google autocomplete and some other free keyword tools can help you come up with keyword ideas. But they don\u2019t tell you how many people are running those searches. Does the keyword you\u2019re thinking about creating a huge blog post for get 10 searches a month or 10,000? You\u2019ll need to use Google Keyword Planner or another tool with search volumes to know for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s only 10, it might not make sense to create content around it-unless your competitors have left that keyword unguarded.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-need-to-know-your-competitors-strengths-and-weak-spots\">You need to know your competitors\u2019 strengths and weak spots<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/N6QBgJfTRlNWE\" width=\"480\" height=\"204\" frameBorder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowFullScreen><\/iframe><p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/thehungergames-the-hunger-games-happy-elizabeth-banks-N6QBgJfTRlNWE\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pre-competition exhibitions give Hunger Games tributes time to observe the competition-especially the Careers, kids who\u2019ve had lots of resources and training to help them win. Katniss knows she has to overcome their advantages to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, when you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/resources\/side-hustle-ebook\/\">launching your business<\/a> it can seem like Google\u2019s first page of search results is already locked down by competitors. But <strong>you may be able to overtake them if you\u2019re resourceful and persistent.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s ranking on Page 1 for the keywords you want to use? Visit those sites if they\u2019re competitors and see what they\u2019re doing. Pay attention to things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How many words are on the page?<\/li><li>What kind of content is on the page? Product photos, a video, just text?&nbsp;<\/li><li>How many subheadings (H2s) there are on the page?<\/li><li>How do they link that page to the rest of their website?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can copy what works in terms of structure but use your own keywords and content to boost your chances of success. And if your planned keywords are turning up a first page of wiki results or other content for people who aren\u2019t ready to buy, adjust your keywords and try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-start-with-the-battles-you-can-win\">Start with the battles you can win<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Cornucopia, Katniss doesn\u2019t go rushing in for the big resources because she knows that\u2019s a fight she can\u2019t win. Instead, she grabs a pack from the edge of the field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/LaBCBvdqqgrwQ\" width=\"480\" height=\"204\" frameBorder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowFullScreen><\/iframe><p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/the-hunger-games-gif-LaBCBvdqqgrwQ\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a lesson here if you have a small website and you\u2019re just starting out. You\u2019re going to have a really difficult time ranking for keywords with 100,000 searches a month, because your website doesn\u2019t have the same level of content, backlinks and <a href=\"https:\/\/respona.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-domain-authority\/\">domain authority<\/a> that competitor sites do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your best bet is to build up to that by <strong>appearing on Page 1 for less-searched keywords<\/strong>. Start with more long form content, like long blog posts or how-to guides, based on keywords that have three to five words and no more than about 500 searches per month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, instead of trying to get your brand-new site to land on Page 1 for 'flaming dress,'\u009d you could try to rank on Page 1 for 'flaming dress custom sewing patterns.'\u009d Grab that small-win resource backpack and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/queens-gambit-website-content\/\">build amazing content<\/a> with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-rules-can-and-will-change\">The rules can and will change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like in the Hunger Games, <strong>you don\u2019t make the SEO rules and those rules can change at any time.<\/strong> Unlike the Hunger Games, Google usually gives advance notice when it\u2019s planning big changes to the way it ranks sites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because there\u2019s no SEO loudspeaker blasting updates to us all as if we\u2019re tributes in the wild, you\u2019ll need to keep up on your own. The easiest way is with the <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/google-algorithm-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moz Google Algorithm Update History<\/a>, which summarizes confirmed and some unconfirmed updates and includes links to blog posts where you can learn more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting your business on Page 1 of Google search results isn\u2019t easy, but it\u2019s possible.
