Google is making it easier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company now lets US-based online sellers <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/shopping\/its-now-free-to-sell-on-google\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">list products for free on Google Shopping<\/a>, with merchants in other countries gaining access to free listings by the end of 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google&nbsp;has done this to help small merchants gain visibility in search results as more consumers shop online during the coronavirus pandemic. <em>(Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/google-my-business-covid19-tools-updates\/\">Google&#8217;s other free COVID-19 tools<\/a> for small business owners.) <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can Google&#8217;s free product listings help your business? And how can you sign up? Read on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-google-shopping\">What is Google Shopping?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shopping is Google\u2019s tool for finding products, browsing options and comparing offerings from different retailers. Depending on how you set up your product listings, shoppers can either buy products on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.productsup.com\/featured-integrations\/google\/\">Google Shopping<\/a> or click through to your store\u2019s website to buy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/tm4MnjoVzskdMi4wJUtjJLfClA2407mT2vN7j9CtssPyLoPZ42wcsBxF-h3fZK2MSzAWSZ92OPO0j-W_Xnr3EwYB6AeXrd3sPSBsy-QoBUsbEi2oNCq3D77KmxD1CsaRcwKXOGFnwcbmlzI5DQ\" alt=\"example of \ngoogle shopping results\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When you search for a product on Google, Shopping is one of your options for viewing results, like Images, News and Videos. Google calls these options 'surfaces,'\u009d and you\u2019ll see that term when you\u2019re setting up your store\u2019s free Shopping listings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Select the Shopping tab and you\u2019ll see only product results:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/6oLKmoBYyNmymYNmUs12EA3fCVeRans0OAQ9mznPZ-uUBPJz3gVfMNE-IgWHjZQWMekovhZoR4RiCzVByAlxNQM9gqiJdN1GYbno8JoWX_40wop_JgSNpdh27syT1eNZEOs-tObEs0kupxsdjQ\" alt=\"free product results in google shopping\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, we\u2019ve highlighted the free product listings in green. There are still paid listings at the top and bottom of each Shopping results page, but the free listings-which are now open to more merchants-make up the middle section, with larger listings and more information than the paid listings. This is the section where you can add your items at no cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/VSzj-S-84KcXwM2gXjci5LVwAwLxbbuAPdHJiXC2fUk35uu2_GKhRkLIHMUMzKWUIOVO1-jcHbVeCO1eGGJw7uY3RcnIXAzr_9UZlaCLJkhfTGLjPrCeZ7HcJY6iMTQYfdIeVjyNmc-hVFuBiA\" alt=\"example of free google shopping product listing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a closer look at a free Shopping listing, with a detailed description, product rating and review link, price comparison tool, and other size options.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-you-list-products-for-free-on-google-shopping\">How do you list products for free on Google Shopping?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The steps you\u2019ll need to take depend on whether you already use Google Merchant Center. If so, it\u2019s just a matter of updating some of your settings. If not, you\u2019ll need to join Merchant Center first.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-havena-t-signed-up-for-google-merchant-center-yet\">If you haven\u2019t signed up for Google Merchant Center yet:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not on Merchant Center yet? Here\u2019s how to change that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with a Gmail address or other Google account linked to your business. Don\u2019t have one? Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/accounts.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/accounts.google.com\/<\/a> and choose <strong>Create accoun<\/strong>t to set one up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/retail\/solutions\/merchant-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sign into Google Merchant Center<\/a> with your Google account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add your business info, including your business display name, which will appear in your Google listings. After you enter your country, you may need to fine-tune your time zone. You can do that in your Merchant Center account settings.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-already-use-google-merchant-center\">If you already use Google Merchant Center:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not need to do anything to get free product listings.<strong> <\/strong>If you already use Merchant Center <strong>and<\/strong> Shopping Ads (the paid program) <strong>and<\/strong> you\u2019ve already opted in to surfaces across Google, you should be set already. Your products should show up automatically in unpaid Shopping results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a Merchant Center account <strong>but<\/strong> you haven\u2019t opted in to surfaces across Google, that\u2019s your next step. Go to your Merchant Center dashboard and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose <strong>Growth<\/strong> from the left menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <strong>Manage programs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <strong>Surfaces across Google<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your store has a physical location, you can also enable <strong>Local surfaces across Google<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Want shoppers to be able to buy your products directly from Google surfaces? If your business qualifies, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/merchants\/answer\/7159729\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sign up for <strong>Shopping Actions<\/strong><\/a> to enable that feature-if your store is registered in the U.S. or France.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read over the <strong>requirements for using surfaces<\/strong>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/structured-data-important-seo\/\">structured data markup of your site<\/a> so Google\u2019s site crawlers can find your products and display them in the right categories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you already have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.productsup.com\/glossary\/term\/product-feed\/\">product feed<\/a> set up, you\u2019re done. If not, let\u2019s look at two ways to get your product listings to Google so they can start displaying them in search results.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-can-you-add-your-products-to-google-merchant-center\">How can you add your products to Google Merchant Center?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t already have a product feed? You can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/merchants\/answer\/7439058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">create one using the detailed instructions in Merchant Center<\/a> and bulk upload your product catalog. You can also add products one at a time. In either case, you need some specific information for your uploads to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gather-your-product-information\">Gather your product information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need to collect and format the following information for each product you want to add. Among the info you\u2019ll need to provide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Id: a unique alphanumeric identifier for each SKU<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Title: product name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Description: a 5,000-character max description that matches the product landing page copy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Link: link to product landing page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Image link: link to main image for the product<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Availability: in stock, preorder or out of stock<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Price: product price that matches the landing page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brand: required for all new items<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Condition: new, refurbished or used<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can review the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/merchants\/answer\/7052112?visit_id=637291375273398411-2568386556&amp;rd=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">entire list of required and optional product data<\/a> before you start working on your feed to make sure you have what you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-set-up-your-first-product-feed-in-google-merchant-center\">Set up your first product feed in Google Merchant Center<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For most small retailers, a simple spreadsheet in Google Sheets should be all that you need to get started. In fact, Google recommends that you use the template they\u2019ve built in Sheets to make the process easier and less prone to errors that can slow down your upload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get your template, from your Merchant Center account dashboard,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <strong>Products.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <strong>Feeds.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose the <strong>blue + button.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you can create your new feed. You\u2019ll select your <strong>country of sale<\/strong>, <strong>language<\/strong> and <strong>destination<\/strong> markets from the dropdown menus provided. Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Continue<\/strong> to your spreadsheet.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <strong>Generate a new Google spreadsheet from a template<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give <strong>temporary permissions<\/strong> to Merchant Center to see and manage your new spreadsheet.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can then add your product data to the spreadsheet. When you\u2019re done, review it all before you <strong>Upload<\/strong> to reduce the time to approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to get started faster with a few of your most popular products? You can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/merchants\/answer\/9495244?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">add those products directly in Merchant Center<\/a> without setting up a feed first. Just choose <strong>Products<\/strong> from your Merchant Center account dashboard, choose <strong>All Products<\/strong> and choose the <strong>blue + button<\/strong> to add products one by one. Hit <strong>Save<\/strong> when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use feeds <strong>and<\/strong> individual product additions to fill out your Shopping product listings as your time and technical skills allow.
