You can set up your first Google Ads campaign in just a few minutes and spend just a few dollars a day. (In fact, if you sign up for HostGator\u2019s Hatchling Plan, you\u2019ll have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/web-hosting\">$100 Google Ads credit<\/a> you can use to get started.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To have the biggest impact with your Google Ads, there are a few things to know before you get started. In this post, we\u2019ll walk through the process of setting up your first Google ad-from the planning stage all the way through analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keyword-planning-is-the-key-to-successful-ad-campaigns\">Keyword planning is the key to successful ad campaigns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you start building your first ad, think about the keywords that people use to find your website. It&#8217;s best practice to choose a grouping of keywords that are most relevant to your business. Google Ads will let you use up to 10 keyword phrases per ad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/keyword-research-beginners-guide\/\">which keywords to use<\/a>, you can try Google Keyword Planner. Type in a few keywords or your website\u2019s URL and Google will give you a list of suggestions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/k2X7_irNzDW8_pejAhxBLYy9Jl2OG4cYCIHLfTWCpVs5RUaHyjGMn9U6cuhGVSosx0elcKm-wpM5Yr4V94ky7EcKodOmhF5e8NW_pmJY7PaASAbHxnZ-pJ70LBC2CtxcVpL-VADnjdPf6QdJRQ\" alt=\"use google keyword planner to find keywords to bid on for first google ad campaign\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s best to include your business name as a keyword, too, because that can help people find your specific business in search results. (Also, if you don\u2019t use your business name as a keyword but your competitors do use it, they could outperform you in search results&#8211;even searches for your business.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-answer-google-adsa-questions-to-set-the-stage-for-your-first-campaign\">Answer Google Ads\u2019 questions to set the stage for your first campaign<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With your keywords, go to ads.google.com and login with your Gmail account or create a Google account. Google\u2019s going to ask you a few questions as you get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-whata-s-your-main-goal-nbsp\">What\u2019s your main goal?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you want more people to call your business, visit your website or come to your brick-and-mortar store? Choose one goal for now. You can always create ads with different goals later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/rsZ6NKDMV4GgTN9PlyNr0QZIvUXdM5NHo0qjCeEA-AGZu5Zkou4gQC0mUMrpt2BEvhay8NyEJjt5oFMu5yivflCiuedPPtwhlMWimhGufgPPbZOZpF6pN5KxkQDrZ1s5VTaPMIUaTusJDTKNxA\" alt=\"choose advertising goal when setting up new google ad campaign\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-are-your-customers-nbsp\">Where are your customers?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You get to choose the geography you would like to target. That could be an area as small as a single ZIP code and as big as an entire country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/CqYqPeo7TOFb52ks0MOldtDlZewzFXJQ1XEqNrvfcslYPvHllFPLri8_yrob1HxgfSYhIoHpB8MybHs14LGSakkT-gqO5XDf5OGDlMYqepsp1FCo0YrXe0q32tQIkM2XhGUi4E63YbHlAV4GAA\" alt=\"setup audience targeting by location in google ads\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-your-keywords-nbsp\">What are your keywords?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s where your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/keyword-research-guide\/\">keyword research<\/a> matters. Click '\u02dcadd keyword theme,\u2019 type in the keywords you\u2019ve chosen, and Google will suggest more related keywords.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/HuaM2jHdouWCqQ6_LtuglZhfHgNO7QHZC9YvFtj5TyRsltvBDNmNg42prC7E6fe6K5I4LrWVGyEWtsZugR14vT0s5hFwhmSftTf7go8TSS0xnGkepF56QhOn6n4HJauQXePF8mNbUjWSn30rZw\" alt=\"set keyword themes in google ads\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can have as many as 10 keywords per theme. Each theme will help match your ads to related searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/JggzE88aHW8Kx0iI88l-FWPEpCciuTZ7g0dQ0MGoLVXliSbhN7q8OFMNE0-HNKPXiH6cDjf2H3ZcwwYKeZ2GMobS-dYVoZEIluuTGZS2Sr9m3N1ozACFajk4muLPWPdsQmhllSTqDqjedB6Flw\" alt=\"google ads shows related keyword themes when setting up an ad\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-write-the-headlines-and-descriptions-for-your-ad\">Write the headlines and descriptions for your ad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After you have your keyword theme set up, it\u2019s time to move on to the next step: writing the headlines and descriptions for your first Google ad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/oog2uJk9KPwNLE9JSc1WwCRLEYyOuXhMmpYlPSjNSDCp8x-Vs88LUjqdPmhuami-kwFtC_QfHP9ls-2v17tp5NXTqm0ExAvuRWsS6-hC-m8OrMGsnQ3WagemnOOmA5KiNEkUJ14YxDDQfUBEEw\" alt=\"add headlines and descriptions for first google ad\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-headlines\">Headlines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>headlines<\/strong> are the blue clickable sections of your ad. Your ad can have three headlines, each with up to 30 characters. One of those headlines should be your business name.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-description\">Description<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After the headlines, there&#8217;s the <strong>description<\/strong>, which is smaller text. You have two description lines at up to 90 characters each. That may seem like a lot of space to fill but go ahead and take it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? The more space your ad takes up on a page, the less room there is for your competitors\u2019 ads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to fill out your ad description is to offer a promotion, something with a strong call to action that gives people an incentive to click the ad and visit your site. For example, '20% off all t-shirts today only.'\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-urls\">URLs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The next text element is your <strong>display URL<\/strong>. Your ad will automatically display your main URL in green. It&#8217;s not clickable, and it&#8217;s basically there to let the customer know what website the ad will take them to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get to your website, they\u2019ll click on your headlines. For this, you\u2019ll want to add the URL that you are actually sending them to in the field marked '\u02dc<strong>final URL<\/strong>.\u2019 This may be different from your display URL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if your ad focuses on one of your products or services, your final URL should be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/create-product-categories-online-store\/\">relevant category page<\/a>, landing page or product page. This helps create the shortest possible path between your ad and what the customer is looking for. That makes it more likely that they\u2019ll convert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-consider-using-extensions\">Consider using extensions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can extend the information you include in each ad with-extensions. You\u2019ll find these tools on the left page menu under <strong>Ads &amp; extensions<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/2375416?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=3119125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sitelink extensions let you include more links<\/a> in your ad copy to different pages on your site. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/6079510?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=3119125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Callout extensions<\/a> let you feature special deals or services. In this example, the callouts show the company\u2019s free shipping, customer service hours and price matching policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/dU-AiNKLlaiLg0u2Wp83B-F0sCqY1gIj0MalXZa9dy8yJNnKzC1Q1lm5i7lL8o6Y1cDuArz-rIQ2QvPdnNPV-9yIEMW2oUVWGqHnBX9K73x7KwI_JTDgeK0XdAaFXvfxCCe2fydjVzxkq8sAjA\" alt=\"google ads callout extensions example\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-choose-your-maximum-daily-ad-budget\">Choose your maximum daily ad budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google will suggest some daily average rates for you, based on your keywords, audience size and goals. For each budget tier, you can see about how many views and clicks your ad should get per month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also set your own budget if you don\u2019t like the options Google gives you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/JwaHRkPzVrZRVu7Jxn0ASTvTVR-G_QrBlLXHxgx_G3d7DrZLraufSlAnsiUyde4gZCD8SBuKLiJV0rES-KelnUzC38kTetaOEgMMcn8pX_vVCYmGj73kNtDVRIcpqFJwNfmzdxuk0NnEDDk9Xg\" alt=\"set budget in google ads\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-set-the-dates-you-want-your-campaign-to-run\">Set the dates you want your campaign to run<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can pick a start and end date for your campaign. You can also pause your campaign or adjust the end date after your campaign begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-check-out-your-ad-before-you-submit-it\">Check out your ad before you submit it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once everything\u2019s filled out, you\u2019ll be able to see how your ad will look in mobile and desktop search results and on Google Partner websites. If you\u2019re not happy with how it looks-or if you spot a typo-now\u2019s the time to go back and make changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/XlU23AXBtqNgc-vvlwAf6bEdSGnXCETb1qmNoab06Q08iwhMQcz5IoaMcj-PueHfP6oNQIsUokUOuI1p437AfJvVPIkLu6gIROn1uk22mjZlUyn7jDE2-1gNETWyvZddrErMuQMhGCiEsbt6UQ\" alt=\"preview your google ad on mobile and desktop before launching campaign\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-submit-your-ad-for-approval\">Submit your ad for approval<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your ad doesn&#8217;t go live right away. Once you submit it, it goes into a queue for editorial approval. That\u2019s where Google makes sure that the ad meets their standards and follows Google Ads policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It usually takes less than 24 hours for Google to approve your ad. If for some reason your ad doesn\u2019t get approved, they\u2019ll let you know why so you can try to correct the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-create-more-ads-on-the-same-theme-and-see-which-ones-do-best\">Create more ads on the same theme and see which ones do best<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve created and submitted that first ad, you\u2019re not done. It\u2019s a best practice to create three to five ads based on the same keywords and geography, so you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/google-ads-success-metrics-performance\/\">track and compare their performance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How? Once you start getting traffic from the ads, keep an eye on the click-through rates for each ad in your Google Ads overview or dashboard. The click-through rate is the percentage of impressions that lead to clicks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you collect enough data over a few days or weeks, the ads with higher click-through rates are the ones you\u2019ll want to stick with.
