Many of the biggest players in tech are making big announcements and moving forward on anticipated projects.<\/p>\n<p>To help you stay on top of this month\u2019s tech news, here are a few main stories to look out for.<\/p>\n<h2>Google Announces Facebook-Like News Feed<\/h2>\n<p>Google has announced that its feed feature, which is already available to anyone using the company\u2019s mobile app, will be<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/07\/19\/google-feed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> moving to the desktop homepage<\/a> for the site. \u00a0The company hasn\u2019t said exactly when this change will happen, but for people who pull up the site every day (which is most of us), the change may have a big effect on how we interact with the service. Instead of a primary focus on the search box, \u00a0people will see a collection of suggested news and culture stories based on their interests.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-17255 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20secgif-final.gif\" alt=\"Google news feed\" width=\"295\" height=\"587\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Facebook Launching Facebook TV<\/h2>\n<p>If you were concerned that there just aren\u2019t enough places online to watch TV, Facebook\u2019s got you covered. They\u2019ve partnered with a number of other media properties to start developing shows that will become available to users this month when<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/7\/26\/16035000\/facebook-tv-vox-buzzfeed-attn-ad-revenue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> they launch Facebook TV<\/a>. Including original TV shows in the Facebook feed provides the company a new format for displaying ads, and could potentially give people a reason to spend more time on the site.<\/p>\n<h2>Hyperloop May Be Moving Forward (Maybe)<\/h2>\n<p>Elon Musk has talked before about the possibility of a hyperloop   a type of transportation technology that can move people very quickly from one city to another. He<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-40677604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> shook up the tech news<\/a> world last month with a Tweet suggesting a hyperloop project had received government approval. In a later tweet he verified that the verbal approval was preliminary and there was a lot of work to do before any project would receive the formal go-ahead, yet even the level of approval he\u2019s got now feels like a big leap forward in the likelihood of seeing this ambitious project realized.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Just received verbal govt approval for The Boring Company to build an underground NY-Phil-Balt-DC Hyperloop. Not content just to shake things up with hyperloop talk, he also made headlines last month by expressing his fear that<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/07\/17\/537686649\/elon-musk-warns-governors-artificial-intelligence-poses-existential-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> AI posed a threat to humankind<\/a>. The comment has set off a battle of ideas between Musk and other prominent techies who have criticized his concern, including roboticist<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/07\/19\/this-famous-roboticist-doesnt-think-elon-musk-understands-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Rodney Brooks<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/7\/25\/16024444\/ai-safety-threat-elon-musk-mark-zuckerberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Facebook\u2019s Mark Zuckerberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Amazon Launches Spark and Pay Places<\/h2>\n<p>Because Amazon can\u2019t go a month without some big news, they\u2019ve recently launched not one, but two new services.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Spark\/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=16907772011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Amazon Spark<\/a> is an Instagram-like feature for app users that will provide photos and other product-related content from customers and influencers with similar interests to yours in the app\u2019s feed.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, they announced<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2017\/07\/19\/amazon-pay-places\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Amazon Pay Places<\/a> which will allow people to use their Amazon account when shopping at brick-and-mortar businesses. While the option is only available at a few TGI Fridays locations so far, if you were worried about Amazon taking over the world of commerce, this is a step that seems poised to make that more of a possibility.<\/p>\n<h2>Release of Samsung Galaxy Note<\/h2>\n<p>After a high profile mishap, with the Note 7 becoming the butt of many jokes when it famously burst into fire for some customers, Samsung is ready to try again. The company has announced that they\u2019ll be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/galaxy-note-8-on-aug-23-samsung-makes-it-official\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> releasing the Note 8<\/a> later this month. If you use Google Analytics (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/add-google-analytics-wordpress-website\/\">you should<\/a>), the feature could add some efficiency to the process for you.<\/p>\n<h2>Lyft Joins the Ranks of Self-Driving Car Developers<\/h2>\n<p>Lyft is throwing their hat into the ring of companies working to develop the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/7\/21\/16005636\/lyft-self-driving-car-technology-hardware-software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> technology for autonomous cars<\/a>. They\u2019ve stated that they expect a majority of their rides to become autonomous over the next few years, so they\u2019re making a move now to be one of the players in developing the technology their business is likely to be dependent on.<\/p>\n<h2>The Dark Web Takes a Hit<\/h2>\n<p>The dark web   sites where people can buy illegal materials   is under attack. The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/news\/dark-web-us-government-alphabay-hansa-marketplace-down-not-working-offline-shutdown-a7851321.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> U.S. government shut down AlphaBay<\/a>, a site considered to be the biggest online market for illegal drugs last month. They followed that up with the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/alphabay-hansa-shut-drug-dealers-flock-dark-web-dreammarket-n785001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> shutdown of Hansa<\/a>, a popular AlphaBay alternative. Each time one market goes down though, another one manages to open up. Nonetheless, the government has made its intentions clear with these moves and there\u2019s reason to expect they\u2019ll continue to follow the illegal trade to shut it down wherever it goes.<\/p>\n<h2>Dropbox Starting to Prepare for IPO<\/h2>\n<p>While the timing on when the IPO would happen is still unclear, Dropbox has made moves that show a plan to go public is in the works. They hired underwriters to help determine their valuation and may make the move later this year. If they do go public this year, they\u2019ll be one of the biggest tech companies to do so in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>As full as August is looking to be with tech news, September is likely to be just as busy.
