It only takes a few minutes to register your domain name and sign up for a web\u00a0hosting plan. The real work this week is the planning, designing and testing that goes into making sure your new site works the way you want it to so you can start reaching customers with it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dig in.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #cc6631;\"><a style=\"color: #cc6631;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/HostGator-Ebook-Guide-To-Launching-Your-Home-Business.pdf\"><strong>Get the FREE eBook: Launch Your New Home Business!<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>1. Choose your domain name<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not sure exactly what that a domain name is? It\u2019s the part of your URL visitors will use to go to your website. Here\u2019s the URL (the internet address, so to speak) for HostGator: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within that URL, hostgator.com is the domain name. There are many domain suffixes (technically known as top-level domains or TLDs) that you can choose from besides .com, like .net and .biz, but .com is the most common.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, your domain name will be short, easy to remember, and not confusing when users type it in a navigation bar. More importantly, though, your domain name should be part of your company brand. Take your time to come up with as many ideas as you can, narrow the field a bit, and then check to see if those names are available. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out our post: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/30\/whats-in-a-name-choosing-the-right-domain-name-for-your-website\/\">Choosing the Best Domain Name for Your Website<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HostGator and other companies that register domain names have tools to check if the name you want is available. For example, I entered '\u02dclife\u2019 into HostGator\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/register.hostgator.com\/\">domain search tool<\/a>. Alas, life.com and all its variations like life.org and life.biz\u00a0belong to other people. If I were really set on including '\u02dclife\u2019 in my domain name, I could consider the alternatives listed below the results chart, like livelifeonline.co.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-14-at-2.45.03-PM.png\" alt=\"Domain name availability\" width=\"705\" height=\"914\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-14-at-2.45.03-PM.png 1110w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-14-at-2.45.03-PM-231x300.png 231w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-14-at-2.45.03-PM-768x996.png 768w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-14-at-2.45.03-PM-789x1024.png 789w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your domain is available, you can register it. Once you\u2019ve found a domain name that works, you may want to see if variations are available, too. If so, you might want to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/register.hostgator.com\/?manage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">register them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also and set them up to redirect visitors to your site at your primary URL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/register.hostgator.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Domain-Name-1.gif\" alt=\"Domain Name\" width=\"468\" height=\"60\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. Check your privacy settings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you register your domain name or names, you\u2019ll have the option to buy inexpensive <a href=\"http:\/\/support.hostgator.com\/articles\/hosting-guide\/lets-get-started\/domain-names-buy-sell-manage\/whois-information-domain-privacy\">domain privacy protection<\/a> that keeps your personal information off WHOIS. WHOIS is a directory run by ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which anyone can use to look up the contact information you used to register your domains. Companies like HostGator that offer privacy shield services use their address in your domain name registration instead of your personal details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>3. Pick a hosting plan<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, you need a place to store whatever you put on your site so visitors can see it. Creating, offering, and maintaining that data storage space is what web hosting companies like HostGator do. Don\u2019t get too overwhelmed by the monthly plan options you\u2019ll see. For almost all new home-based businesses, an inexpensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/web-hosting\">shared business\u00a0hosting plan<\/a> will have everything you need. Whatever host and plan you choose, you should consider:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of domains you can register on a single plan <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Available bandwidth, which will affect how fast your site loads and how many people can view your site at one time<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email account tools, which you\u2019ll use to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/14\/personal-email-account-destroying-credibility\/\">create branded email addresses<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What templates or site-building tools the host provides and how easy they are to use<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What e-commerce tools the host supports, if you\u2019re planning to have an online shop on your site<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Downtime, which is how often and how long the web host\u2019s servers-and therefore your website&#8211;are typically unavailable<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customer support availability and quality<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>4. Build your site<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/domains\">buy and register your domain<\/a> and have a hosting plan, you\u2019re ready to set up your site. There are a few housekeeping tasks to do before you start designing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjust your site\u2019s control panel so the site is not live while you\u2019re putting it together. While you\u2019re at it, close comments for now. You can reopen them later if you add a blog to your site, and in the meantime, you won\u2019t have to worry about random spam comments or visitors seeing your site while it\u2019s '\u02dcunder construction.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick a site template or use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/website-builder\">website builder\u00a0tool<\/a> to start creating your home page. You can set it up however you like. Just keep in mind that a good business website must have these elements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/28\/reasons-why-wordpress-website\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responsive design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so your site will be easy to read and use on smartphones<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your business name and a short, descriptive tagline in the page header<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clear, brief explanation of what your business is and what you do<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bit about you, your business, your accomplishments, and testimonials from customers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact information (phone number and email address) on every page of your site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A product list,\u00a0shopping cart, and checkout if you\u2019re selling products online<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the basics, of course. You can add photos, product videos, a blog, and other elements to your site over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Test and update<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you get your basic site set up, view it on as many devices and browsers as you can. Ask family and friends to help you by checking it out and reporting any problems with page display, load times, and navigation. Fix any problems and then view it again. When you\u2019re satisfied, go back to your host\u2019s control panel and make your site visible to the rest of the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your site is live, but that\u2019s just the beginning. Schedule regular site-maintenance time to add features, make changes, and keep your template and plugins up to date. Regular maintenance makes the site more secure and helps it look its best. You may also want to subscribe to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/codeguard\">site backup service<\/a> to maintain the most recent version of your site and spare you the trouble of rebuilding your site if there\u2019s ever a problem during a template or plug-in upgrade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you\u2019ve done all these steps, you have a basic home business website that you\u2019re ready to promote.
