Before you even have a business, you need to have an idea of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/10\/ultimate-guide-building-using-personas\/\"><span class=\"s3\">type of customers<\/span><\/a> you want to target.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the best ways to start a business is to solve your own problem and to be your own customer. By targeting an audience that shares similar traits as you, you\u2019re marketing to yourself and will then have an idea of the needs &amp; wants of your target audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>For example:<\/b> I was an aspiring entrepreneur looking to start a low-cost business to gain experience. I didn\u2019t have a programming background, didn\u2019t know how to create a website, and had no previous entrepreneurial experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">By targeting myself, I had a good idea of who I\u2019m targeting, everything that they believe, what type of lifestyle they lead, goals and dreams, challenges and fears.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Step 2: Stalk Your Target Audience To Find Out Their Interests<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">At this stage, you\u2019re not trying to find out what your audience is willing to <i>pay<\/i> for. You\u2019re just trying to find out what they\u2019re interested in, so you can bring traffic to your website. To do this, I recommend doing market research on <a href=\"http:\/\/quora.com\"><span class=\"s3\">Quora<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Quora is a platform where people ask questions. What better way to find out how to help your audience than being fed questions they have on the top of their minds? All you have to do is search for topics in which your target audience would be interested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11098\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/quora.png\" alt=\"Business Ideas\" width=\"777\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/quora.png 777w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/quora-300x68.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/quora-768x175.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>For example:<\/b> By searching for 'business ideas'\u009d, I could see the specific questions that my target audience is asking. You can then dig deeper into each question and see which type of answers are the most popular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Do this several times and you\u2019ll start to notice similar types of questions that are being asked. Those are the type of questions you\u2019ll want to address because that\u2019s what your target audience is interested in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Step 3: Build Your 80\/20 Website<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The most important thing to remember is that you\u2019ll want to do the bare minimum and take an 80\/20 approach to building your website. There\u2019s no point in spending hundreds of dollars on a professional website until you\u2019ve validated your business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">To build an 80\/20 website, I first <a href=\"https:\/\/register.hostgator.com\/\">set up a domain<\/a> on HostGator and <a href=\"http:\/\/support.hostgator.com\/articles\/specialized-help\/technical\/wordpress\/how-to-install-wordpress\"><span class=\"s3\">installed WordPress<\/span><\/a>. I then downloaded the <a href=\"https:\/\/sumo.com\/app\/highlighter?src=gp-hostgator\"><span class=\"s3\">SumoMe WordPress Plugin<\/span><\/a> to create a <span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sumo.com\/app\/welcome-mat?src=gp-lifelong\">landing page<\/a>\u00a0with Welcome Mat<\/span>\u00a0that took about 30 minutes and looked like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/8020.png\" alt=\"Landing Page Example\" width=\"1498\" height=\"701\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/8020.png 1498w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/8020-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/8020-768x359.png 768w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/8020-1024x479.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1498px) 100vw, 1498px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Once you have the general design of the site created, you need to make sure your website has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/05\/write-better-headlines-2014\/\"><span class=\"s3\">effective headline<\/span><\/a> that makes it clear to visitors exactly what your website is offering. Use words that clearly explain the benefits your audience will receive by being on your website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Once your website is up and running, it\u2019s time to drive traffic to it and get your first set of email subscribers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Step 4: Get Your First 100 Email Subscribers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Many people have a tendency to try and keep their website 'secret'\u009d to their friends. But if you were opening a restaurant, you\u2019d tell all your friends and family to drop by. You should do the same for your website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">To get your first 100 email subscribers, you\u2019ll want to leverage your personal network. They might not be your target audience, but they may have friends that are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/first100.png\" alt=\"First 100 Subscribers\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For example:<\/strong> I sent a message to 223 people on my Facebook network that looked like this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11101\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/FB-network.png\" alt=\"Facebook Message\" width=\"706\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/FB-network.png 706w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/FB-network-300x91.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">As a result, 64% of the people I reached out to joined my email list, and many of them referred other friends who joined as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Another benefit of leveraging your personal network is that you\u2019ll gain some initial feedback on the type of words and problems your target audience has. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Here\u2019s an example of some feedback I received:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Facebook-Feedback.png\" alt=\"Facebook Feedback\" width=\"382\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Facebook-Feedback.png 382w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Facebook-Feedback-300x123.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Based on the feedback, I learned that some of my target audience were tired of their typical '9-5 desk job'\u009d and were having problems with gaining the 'courage'\u009d to quit their job. I would use these learnings for ideas for articles, and also by leveraging the same language my audience uses in my sales copy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">After signing up your personal network, you\u2019ll need to get specific feedback from people you don\u2019t know. You\u2019ll need to start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/11\/3-critical-mistakes-you-might-be-making-with-your-business-website\/\">marketing your website<\/a> to acquire your first 1,000 email subscribers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Step 5: Get Your First 1,000 Email Subscribers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Why 1,000 email subscribers? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Well, 1,000 subscribers is enough to notice common trends in the type of problems your target audience is experiencing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">There are many ways to actually <a href=\"https:\/\/sumo.com\/stories\/email-list-building?src=gp-hostgator\"><span class=\"s3\">grow your email list.<\/span><\/a> The right method depends on your industry, and it\u2019s up to you to run experiments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">I decided to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/21\/importance-of-evergreen-content\/\"><span class=\"s3\">evergreen content<\/span><\/a> to attract my target audience to my website. I would promote the content on Quora by answering relevant questions, and include a link to my site:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11103\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Wilson-Hung.png\" alt=\"2016 Business Ideas\" width=\"591\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Wilson-Hung.png 591w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Wilson-Hung-300x95.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Once visitors were on my website, I collected their emails by using pop-ups. Pop-ups are still a very effective way to collect emails. From just one article, I was able to collect 147 emails (conversion rate 6%). Here\u2019s an <a href=\"https:\/\/sumo.com\/stories\/pop-up-examples?src=gp-hostgator\"><span class=\"s3\">example of my pop-up<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11104\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Popups.png\" alt=\"Popup Example\" width=\"1261\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Popups.png 1261w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Popups-300x92.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Popups-768x236.png 768w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Popups-1024x314.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1261px) 100vw, 1261px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">By repeating the same process, I was able to grow my email list to 1,000 subscribers within a month. I now had a large enough audience to engage with to find out their main problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Step 6: Find Your Audience\u2019s Biggest Problem<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Once you have 1,000 subscribers, it\u2019s time to find out what your target audience\u2019s biggest problem is. And what\u2019s the best way to do this? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Ask them<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Send an email to your subscribers asking them what their biggest problem is. Here\u2019s what my email looks like:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11105\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/email.png\" alt=\"Survey Email Sample\" width=\"568\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/email.png 568w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/email-300x165.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">I would then get responses like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11106\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/email-with-arrows.png\" alt=\"Survey Email Responses\" width=\"568\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/email-with-arrows.png 568w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/email-with-arrows-300x164.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Based on the responses from your subscribers, you\u2019ll start to notice common trends and problems your target audience is experiencing. From these trends, you should be able to create a product hypothesis to help solve their problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Step 7: Create A Product That Solves Your Audience\u2019s Problem<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The subscribers who reply to your email are going to be your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/22\/the-one-thing-you-should-do-to-get-more-out-of-your-email-list\/\"><span class=\"s3\">most engaged users<\/span><\/a>. These are the people who are most likely to purchase a product from you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Before you actually spend the time to create the product, you\u2019ll want to validate it by sending your subscribers a survey. For example, Bryan Harris would send a survey with details of his product to his subscribers to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.videofruit.com\/online-course-sell\/\"><span class=\"s3\">validate his online course<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11107\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/form.png\" alt=\"Survey Form\" width=\"565\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/form.png 565w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/form-300x187.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The key question he was looking for was <i>'do you want to buy the course?'\u009d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">If a subscriber answered 'yes,'\u009d he would follow it up with a link to a sales page with an early bird discount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The results? <b>He gained 39 pre-orders before even having a product ready.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11108\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/preorders.png\" alt=\"Pre-Orders\" width=\"559\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/preorders.png 559w, https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/preorders-300x188.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Bryan only sent the email to 225 subscribers.
