Every single year we see new technology updates that completely shake up the space. But in many ways, some things never change, right? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">We originally published this list of marketing trends in 2016. Many of them are still hot trends we wrestle with, and others are just coming to the forefront. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward to the end of the list &#8211; virtual reality and internet of things (or chatbots) are things still inching into our marketing plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look back at digital marketing trends we can learn from 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"p1 wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"s2\">1. Marketing Automation <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Marketing can be an incredibly time consuming process, especially as the number of platforms you need to be active on continue to grow. Thus the rise of marketing automation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">One of the simplest forms of marketing automation is sending out an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/small-business-email-marketing-automation\/\">automated email marketing campaign<\/a>. Chances are, most of your reading this are already familiar with this tool. However, Google is finally <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/adwords\/answer\/2375464?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s3\">enabling the use of video advertising<\/span><\/a> within the search results.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">This suggests that video advertising is only going to become more prevalent. If you haven\u2019t hopped on board yet, you should; you can bet that a few of your competitors are going to utilize this trend. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"p1 wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"s2\">3. Mobile Continues To Grow As A Force<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Mobile isn\u2019t going anywhere. In fact, it\u2019s only growing. In 2016, Google announced the <a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/its-official-google-says-more-searches-now-on-mobile-than-on-desktop-220369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s3\">mobile traffic was larger than desktop traffic<\/span><\/a> in ten different countries. That trends continues to climb as smart phones are often easier for people to afford than laptop computers. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Google\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/library\/google\/google-mobile-friendly-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s3\">latest algorithm<\/span><\/a> update also punished sites that weren\u2019t mobile friendly, or didn\u2019t have a mobile version of their website. It\u2019s easy to see that Google has all their force behind a mobile-first future. It\u2019s a smart choice to hop on board. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"p1 wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"s2\">4. Virtual Reality<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Virtual reality is going to play a huge role into the future. The Oculus Rift has already been introduced to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/special-reports\/oculus-rift-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s3\">very positive response<\/span><\/a>. Now, and into the future, virtual reality will influence how marketers reach their customers and how they tell stories.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Virtual reality enables <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/23\/the-future-of-video-advertising-360-degree-ads-hit-youtube\/\">immersive storytelling<\/a> at a level we\u2019ve never seen before. It\u2019s a good idea to hop on the VR train sooner, rather than later. Now is a good time to get a first look of what it\u2019s like to use this new platform, and be part of its inclusion in your brand\u2019s eventual strategy. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"p1 wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"s2\">5. The Internet of Things<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Wearable technology is only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/top-iot-and-wearable-tech-trends-for-2016-smartwatches-in-transition-as-smartglasses-rule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s3\">going to grow<\/span><\/a>. With this growth we\u2019ll see an increase in the amount of data this gives people to work with. This smart data that\u2019s collected throughout the day-to-day lives of potential customers will allow for even more targeted and behavior-based marketing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Wearable devices, such as the Apple Watch, will continue to blur the line between the online world and the real world.
