HostGator’s New Cloud Hosting

Thursday, March 31, 2016 by

In the hosting world, the word “cloud” has been thrown around quite a bit these past few years. It’s been lauded as the future, and it’s been party to scandal. But like any good celebrity tale, cloud has emerged from the rumors and scandals and immersed itself in such a way as to guarantee itself a long and fulfilling career.

What Exactly Is Cloud?

Technically speaking, “cloud” is a catch-all term that describes the dynamic serving of data (generally a website, but also think service like Google Apps) – which is physically hosted on multiple devices – by utilization of any of a number of configuration possibilities. Sounds complicated, but basically it boils down to a faster and more efficient experience for the end user due to vastly eliminating the possibility of hardware (or other) failure.

What Makes HostGator’s Cloud Product Special?

Well, we’re glad you asked! The magic and nuance of cloud comes into play with the backend management, which is to say how effectively potential issues are identified and the establishing of solutions to those issues well before they occur, such that the solution becomes automatic should the potential issue ever arise. It’s a little bit like predicting the future.

HostGator was not the first to market a cloud product by any means; we watched our competitors and the industry in general, and we learned from the mistakes that others made. Meanwhile, we were taking small, but sure-footed steps towards our own cloud offering, which we have now released.

But What Specifically Makes HostGator’s Cloud Product Special?

All other factors aside, there are four things that we feel sets our cloud product apart from everyone else:

Reliability – As mentioned above, the very nature of Cloud involves your data being stored on multiple devices; as such your data remains available, and the uptime of your site is maximized. This is due to the intelligent backend, which is able to immediately serve your website from an alternate location should any issue arise with the current server. In other words, your visitors will never even know there was any issue.

Speed – The same backend which provides our exceptional degree of reliability is also partly responsible for the blazing speeds we are able to achieve with our cloud hosting, largely due to our use of state-of-the-art SSD storage. Solid State Drives are hard drives that literally have no moving parts within them, the same as you’ll find in a MacBook Air (as one example). No moving parts equals much faster and more reliable performance. On the front end we’ve incorporated a few more tactics, including Varnish caching, which results in your site responding up to 2x faster than a traditional hosting platform.

Scalability – One of the downsides of traditional hosting platforms is the inability to absorb large increases in traffic to your website. Essentially the server would become overloaded and the result would be that error pages are displayed rather than your website (definitely not something you want your growing audience to experience when attempting to view your site). We have addressed this issue by allowing for the instantaneous scaling of up to 8CPU cores and 8GB of RAM; no downtime, reboots, or data migrations required. This is 4x the computer power available of another leading provider.

Ease of Management – None of the above means anything unless you are able to interact and control these features in an intuitive and meaningful way. Our newly-designed cloud dashboard is a breath of fresh air for anyone who has historically been subject to dealing with less-than-ideal management panels or dashboards. Want to know how fast is your site loading? Or which pages are the most popular? How about your uptime, and even global reach? All of these metrics (and many more!) are literally right at your fingertips.

That All Sounds Pretty Excellent, But What Else?

Our cloud hosting platform can only be described in so many words, but as with most things it’s by far better to simply try it out for yourself and see what you think. You can now take cloud for a test drive at 30% off. Simply use the following coupon code upon signup to receive your discount: CPN30NT

      Hi Akramul,

Multi-Domain SSL are available on all of HostGator’s plans except the Hatchling plan. Based on your needs for hosting asp.net and MS SQL Server, our Windows Hosting plan may be a better fit: https://www.hostgator.com/windows-hosting

You can also visit this page to compare the features of the different plans.

      Hi Ryo,

Unfortunately, no. You may be able to transfer them onto a virtual private server, but it will unlikely work with our cloud hosting. Please reach out to our support team if you have any other questions.

is ruby on rails supported in cloud hosting?

What are the downsides of cloud hosting? It seems from the advantages laid out here, that cloud hosting should make all other types of hosting obsolete. Why are you still offering shared hosting plans for example, if cloud hosting outshines it in every way?

      Hi Bhagwad,

Great question. It’s not uncommon for people to start a website, but be unsure about investing in and maintaining it long-term. There are also situations when you only expect smaller numbers of traffic (super niche/localized sites, for example), or you are running a basic website. In these cases, shared hosting can be the more affordable option.

HostGator customers can seamlessly upgrade their hosting plans, too, as their websites grow.
